The Sun Herald reports the New Orleans Saints aren't interested in re-signing oft-injured TE Cam Cleeland during the off-season and appear to be in the market for a new tight end. GM Randy Mueller said the team doesn't have a tight end that can do everything for them. Eddie Williams is an excellent receiver and Lamont Hall is a solid blocker, according to Mueller, but they don't have a tight end that can play every down. Offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy has spent plenty of time checking out upcoming rookie TEs during the Senior Bowl this week.

However, TE Cam Cleeland (ankle) may be available after practicing all week. CB Kevin Mathis (neck) practiced and tested his sore neck but the team is likely to start Michael Hawthorne in his place this weekend. FS Richard Newsome (foot) did not practice on Friday.

Projected starter Cameron Cleeland and blocking ace Lamont Hall are assured of roster spots. However, the race for No. 3 appears to close to call with Dave Stachelski, Johnny Mitchell and Boo Williams. All three are hoping to get playing time in the preseason finale and are hoping to impress the coaching staff for what may be just one, or at most two additional slots.

The Associated Press reports after New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett made a tough decision on his starting QB, he now faces a tough decision at TE. Tight end is a key feature of the team's offense. "I have a hard time picking three or four tight ends right now," Haslett said. "Some of them do some things well. Other guys do other things well." Currently, Lamont Hall has been the most impressive, Haslett said. He said Hall has been the team's best blocker and receiver so far in camp. Cam Cleeland is back on the practice field this summer, slowly working himself back into playing shape. Haslett said Cleeland is struggling some now, especially with his footwork and technique.

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints tendered their seven exclusive rights free agents on Thursday. Backup QB Jake Delhomme, LB Phil Clarke, TEs Lamont Hall and Dave Stachelski, OT Daryl Terrell, DE Willie Whitehead and WR Robert Wilson were given tenders. Stachelski was tendered at $298,000, while all the others were given $389,000 offers. OT Marcus Price, a restricted free agent, was not tendered a contract and thus he is now an unrestricted free agent.

The Post-Crescent reports the Green Bay Packers are benching TE Tyrone Davis in favor of TE Jeff Thomason this weekend. The team has been disappointed with the slow progress of Davis this year and will see his role diminish the final few weeks. The Packers also plan to work TE Lamont Hall into the action more as well. In other news, newly signed Roy Barker is expected to practice today. The Packers gave RB Dorsey Levens (rib) yesterday off of practice to rest his sore ribs. OL Ross Verba (knee) also was held out of practice and may not be able to play this weekend.
