New York Mets SP Jeremy Hefner was battered for six runs in 3 2/3 innings in an 11-5 San Diego Padres rout Thursday, May 24, at Citi Field. Hefner performed well in his first two innings before a 68-minute rain delay interrupted. "We haven't had time to discuss it yet," Mets manager Terry Collins said, "where we're headed and what we're gonna do." Sources indicated Hefner could get another turn.

Mets | Manager insists Frank Francisco is fine

Sun, 13 May 2012 00:25:27 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said there was no need for him to speak with CL Frank Francisco, a day after Francisco blew the save in the Mets' 6-5 loss to the Miami Marlins. "To me you pick and choose your spots," Collins said. "If you go to him after every game where he has a little rough outing, they get tired of hearing it. He's a veteran guy — he knows exactly what is going on."

Mets | Ike Davis might have Valley Fever

Sat, 03 Mar 2012 16:08:55 -0800

The New York Mets are treating 1B Ike Davis (ankle, illness) as if he has Valley Fever. Davis said Saturday, March 3, that blood tests administered in New York 11 days ago have not yet been returned, and no official diagnosis has been determined yet. Mets manager Terry Collins, however, is monitoring Davis as if he has the illness.

Davis said he has experienced no symptoms, which according to a Mayo Clinic website can appear one to three weeks after exposure. Symptoms include fever, cough, chest pain, chills, night sweats, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, joint aches and a red spotty rash.

The site says even when Valley Fever is symptomatic, it "often clears on its own. Yet for older adults and others at high risk, recovery can be slow." The club said Davis had a lung infection when they performed tests on Davis recently, saying he required no antibiotic treatment.

There are no signs yet that say Davis will miss more than occasional game, but Collins said Lucas Duda would move in to play first base if Davis must miss extended time. Any shorter absence(s) by Davis would be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Fantasy Tip: Davis already was recovering from extensive ankle injuries from 2011. Valley Fever ended Jose Vavra's career when he was a teammate of Collins and halted Conor Jackson's in 2009. Jackson has since returned to active duty, but his bout with this illness likely sapped a chunk of his once highly regarded abilities since.

If the test results confirm New York and Davis' suspicions, consider Davis' 2012 durability in jeopardy and mark him as a riskier option for a mixed corner infield or an NL-only starter spot. More will likely be revealed in the coming days, but for now, be cautious in your bidding for Davis' potentially limited services.
