The Times-Picayune reports New Orleans Saints OT Willie Roaf (knee surgery) was on the team's expansion list but failed a physical on Friday. As reported, the team replaced him with S Richard Newsome on their five-man list. Roaf has been dealing personal issues and is behind in his rehabilitation. Agent Peter Schaffer said Roaf is rehabbing to the best of his ability and has a strong desire to play football in 2002.

The New Orleans Saints fifth expansion player is S Richard Newsome. There had been lots of speculation that OT Willie Roaf was the fifth player submitted by the team, but it was Newsome, who needed to pass a physical before officially being added to the list. Newsome has since passed the physical and will be available to the Houston Texans on the 18th of February.

The New Orleans Saints have declared S Richard Newsome, FB Moran Norris, G Scott Sanderson, T Tutan Reyes, WR Onomo Ojo and DE Kenny Smith inactive for tonight's game. QB Jake Delhomme is the team's emergency QB.

According to ESPN's John Clayton, New Orleans Saints TEs Eddie Williams and Lamont Hall took the majority of the snaps with the first-team offense. However, TE Cam Cleeland (ankle) may be available after practicing all week. CB Kevin Mathis (neck) practiced and tested his sore neck but the team is likely to start Michael Hawthorne in his place this weekend. FS Richard Newsome (foot) did not practice on Friday.

ESPN's John Clayton reports New Orleans Saints OLT William Roaf (knee) will be downgraded to doubtful in the next day and is not expected to play this weekend, marking his third missed game of the year. FS Richard Newsome (foot) and TE Cam Cleeland (ankle) are also going to miss the game.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints TE Cam Cleeland (left ankle) missed practice Wednesday and he remains doubtful to play Sunday. S Richard Newsome (right foot) also is doubtful. Newsome tested the foot briefly but spent most of practice riding a stationary bike.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett said OT William Roaf (knee) just has a bruised knee. As reported, there is not any ligament damage. Roaf didn't undergo an MRI and he's currently day-to-day. DE Joe Johnson (triceps) re-injured his triceps that has been bothering him on and off this year, but he's expected to play this weekend. CB Michael Hawthorne (high ankle sprain) may return on Sunday, he's still day-to-day. S Richard Newsome (arch) is doubtful for this weekend's game.

The Associated Press reports the New Orleans Saints were late announcing their roster cuts today because they were unable to locate one of the players, causing the delay. TE Johnny Mitchell, cut earlier today, said he is not looking to retire again. "I'll see what happens the next few days," Mitchell said. "If nothing happens I'll just keep in shape for this year. Then try working for Houston." LB Phil Clarke, who started four games last season and played in 14, was confused by his release. Six of the Saints seven draft picks made the roster. Two undrafted rookie free agents - FB James Fenderson and S Richard Newsome are on the current roster.
