The Charlotte Observer reports the Carolina Panthers are about $721,000 below the 2002 salary cap. RB Tshimanga Biakabutuka, CB Doug Evans, QB Jeff Lewis, DT Tim Morabito, DE Jason Peter and DE Chuck Smith are still counting for about $9.9 million in "dead money."

According to the Charlotte Observer, the one-year contract signed by QB Jeff Lewis with the New Orleans Saints is valued at $525,000. There is no signing bonus, but he will receive a $25,000 bonus if he makes the roster in September.

As an update to Tuesday's report, the Times Picayune reports the deal QB Jeff Lewis received from the New Orleans Saints is for one-year. Financial terms still have not been disclosed. Lewis is expected to compete for a backup job behind starter Aaron Brooks.

Carolina Panthers head coach George Seifert said QB Chris Weinke (shoulder) has a shoulder injury that's quite bruised right now. Seifert said the medical staff currently suggests that Weinke would be able to play this weekend. As previously noted, the team is looking at free agent QBs. Former Panthers QB Jeff Lewis' name has come up in conversations, too.

The Press Gazette reports the Green Bay Packers conducted a workout with former Carolina Panthers QB Jeff Lewis on Thursday. "He looked OK,” director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie said. “Nothing imminent. We’ll keep him on our short list.” The Packers wanted a first-hand look at Lewis because he’s familiar with the West Coast offense.

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com sources told him Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis is interested in adding a No. 3 QB to his roster. The Browns definitely will add a third quarterback within the next 24 hours. "We've got our ear to the ground," Davis said. Jeff Lewis and Kent Graham could be two potential candidates after both became roster casualties on Sunday, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported.
