Jason LaCanfora, of the Washington Post, reports P Eddie Johnson was released after he could not complete his first practice with the Washington Redskins Tuesday, Aug. 29. Johnson said his leg felt tired after kicking so much. Johnson beat out free agent P Toby Gowin (Jaguars) in the morning workout at Redskins Park, league sources said, but the team could opt to bring Gowin back. Agent Ken Harris said Johnson kicked off and punted well in the morning. Johnson left with a large ice pack around his upper leg. "I understand 100 percent," Harris said. "I have so much respect for (special teams coach) Danny Smith and his decision."

Current P Derrick Frost has struggled so far. "The balls in my court," said Frost, still plagued by the inconsistency that troubled him last year. "I just need to play well. If I do, I'll be here. If I don't, I probably won't."

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars P Chris Hanson has lost 40 pounds in the offseason to help improve on his ranking of No. 18 in the league in 2005 for net average. Hanson also welcomes the competition from P Toby Gowin and sees it as a way for him to improve his game. "Competition is always good. It brings out the best in you. You never know in this business," Hanson said. "It keeps you on your toes. It keeps you competing at a high level. …We can make each other better."

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars P Toby Gowin will challenge P Chris Hanson for the punting job. He will also be asked to push PK Josh Scobee, primarily on kickoffs. Gowin has extensive experience as a kickoff specialist. Head coach Jack Del Rio said, "This guy [Gowin] has punted in the league and has kicked off in the league. We want a guy who can do both, because we're not bringing in two [kickers] this year."

Both players punted three times and had no returns. Koenen averaged 40.3 yards per punt, while Gowin averaged 34.7.

New York Jets head coach Herman Edwards said he was impressed with P Toby Gowin's performance during Week 11's victory over the Cleveland Browns, reports Casey Pearce of NewYorkJets.com. "I thought he punted well," Edwards said. "He created some better field position for us when he punted. He did a good job. He was more consistent. He's punted well the last couple of weeks." For the game, Gowin averaged 41.6 yards on eight punts and was also attributed with two special teams tackles.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets head coach Herman Edwards expressed some concern following the Week 7 game at the New England Patriots about P Toby Gowin, whose gross average is 37.8 yards per punt – which ranks 32nd and last among NFL qualifying punters. "That weather wasn't real conducive up there," Edwards said of the damp, cold New England conditions. "Am I concerned? Can he punt better? Well, yeah, but he's our guy. At times he's made some great kicks, too. We can't forget about the ones he's made." Gowin had net punts of 24 and 30 yards against the Patriots. Part of the problem could be is that Gowin has also handled all but two of the Jets' 28 kickoffs.

Gowin finished with a net punting average of 39.7 yards and nailed two kickoffs for touchbacks, his first two of the season. After several weeks of close scrutiny, head coach Bill Parcells said: "I sure do feel better about him." Gowin, who remains last in the NFL in gross punting average, seems to have secured his job at least through the remainder of the season.

P Toby Gowin is last in the NFC with a 39.1 punting average, and his kickoffs have rarely gotten past the 10-yard line lately. Parcells, while not being specific, said the team was contemplating several possible changes. And when asked if the punter was one of those possible changes, Parcells said "absolutely." The Cowboys could work a punter out this week.

"I'm working through it," Gowin said. "I aggravated it a little more each week, but I try to stay loose during the game and keep heat on it."
