ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports there is no chance that free agent OT Wally Williams (Saints) will play in the NFL during the 2003 season, despite the fact that several teams are courting him, because of a suspension for a repeat violation of the league's substance abuse policy. The earliest he could join a team is in the spring of 2004, when he would be 33 years old, but Williams is not planning a comeback.

Ravens | Cool Off On Williams

Mike Preston, of the Baltimore Sun, reports for The Sporting News that the Baltimore Ravens have cooled off on trying to sign free agent OG Wally Williams (Seahawks). The two sides could rekindle talks before training camp, but Williams seems set on retiring.

As an update to a previous story, the Advocate reports New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett said OL Wally Williams was in good shape and may be activated for Sunday's game with the Ravens. He is coming off the suspended list and if he is activated, the Saints would have to release another player.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints G Wally Williams (knee) is hoping to make it back in time as a reserve for the team's season opener. Tuesday, he lightly jogged on his surgically repaired right knee and said he hopes to return to practice on a limited basis next week. "The real goal is to be back for Green Bay (Sept. 15)," Williams said.

The Washington Post reports the Washington Redskins appear to be once again interested in signing free agent G Ray Brown (49ers). The team also may be trying to trade for a younger offensive lineman. Executives from some NFL teams believe that the New Orleans Saints will trade or release G Wally Williams or C Jerry Fontenot before the season.

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints starting offensive line is projecting this way: LT Kyle Turley, LG Wally Williams, C Jerry Fontenot, RT Victor Riley and RG LeCharles Bentley. OT Spencer Folau can play guard but is working exclusively at right tackle and he will probably start the first game when Riley serves his one-game suspension. Bentley, who played two years at center and one each at guard and tackle at Ohio State, has been impressive during the team's first four practices and appears to be the favorite over OL Tutan Reyes to start at right guard.

As an update to earlier reports, the Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints OL Wally Williams suffered both a pulled left hamstring and a sprained left ankle on Sunday. The team hopes he'll be able to practice on Wednesday. LB Phil Clarke (concussion) and S Jay Bellamy (small fracture right elbow) were also injured on Sunday. Clarke is expected to be fine while the team is unsure of Bellamy's status right now.

The Advocate reports the only two New Orleans Saints to miss practice on Thursday were backup strongside LB Brian Williams and backup MLB DeShone Myles. Williams is nursing a strained Achilles' tendon and Myles has a knee injury. Myles was downgraded from probable to doubtful for Sunday's game. G Wally Williams (neck) remains probable. Coach Jim Haslett said the results of an MRI showed no major problems for Williams.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett said Monday the team is expected to be at full strength for Sunday's opening game. WRs Joe Horn and Albert Connell, DT Norman Hand, DE Darren Howard, CBs Kevin Mathis and Steve Israel and G Wally Williams all practiced during the Saints two-hour workout Monday in the Superdome. All worked with the starting units except Israel and Connell. Israel is not quite 100 percent yet and Connell is currently behind WR Willie Jackson on the depth chart.

The Times Picayune reports New Orleans Saints CBs Steve Israel and Kevin Mathis and WR Albert Connell played for the first time this pre-season. Each played about 20 snaps and reported no major setbacks from their injuries. Mathis started at left corner and played four series in his first action since spraining his left knee during the first week of training camp. Connell, recovering from a hamstring problem, started and played most of the first half with the first- and second-team offense. He had one catch. Israel played most of the second and third quarters. WR Joe Horn (ribs) did not play. DT Norman Hand, DE Darren Howard and CB Fred Thomas along with RB Ricky Williams and OL Wally Williams sat out the game. All six are expected to be back for the season opener next Sunday.

SportsLine.com's Len Pasquarelli reports OL Wally Williams of the New Orleans Saints will complete a simple restructuring of his contract to get the team more cap space. The team will reduce Williams' scheduled base salary for 2001 from $2.9 million to the minimum of $477,000 and guarantee the difference in a signing bonus. Williams' salary cap value for 2001 will be reduced from $4.5 million to about $2.88 million. As previously reported, the team is thinking about setting up a visit with free agent TE Mark Chmura and some of that cap savings could go toward signing him.

The AP reports the Saints have signed Ravens Free Agent OL Wally Williams to a five-year contract. No other details at this time. "He's a proven outstanding player in the league," coach Mike Ditka said. "He can play in more than one position, but we don't want that. We want to solidify the left side of the line. We think we're going to have a good line. We really think we're going to have a great young line and that's important." Update: ESPN reports the deal is four-years for $18.5 million.
