The San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman reports San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean defended pitching coach Dave Righetti as some fans have expressed displeasure with his work due to struggles of SP Barry Zito and SP Matt Cain. "I think there's not much basis for the Zito angst because look at how he finished," Sabean said. "He started 0-8. The way he finished had a lot to do with what (Righetti) and (bullpen coach Mark Gardner) did with him when we decided certain changes needed to be made. As far as Cain's concerned ... a lot gets erased when you win games, and we could not ever score five or six runs for him."

"If you relax, you'll have some movement, and you'll last longer, make better pitches." Righetti told Zito to emulate retired SP Kirk Rueter, because he did not overthrow and allowed his pitches to move.
