The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos G Dan Neil was fined $15,000 Thursday for an illegal block that broke LB Bryan Cox's right leg during Denver's 31-20 victory over the New England Patriots last weekend. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan questioned whether Neil even made contact with Cox. Neil will appeal the fine. Also Thursday, the league fined Broncos LB Al Wilson $5,000 for hitting New England QB Tom Brady in the shoulder after a Patriots touchdown.

He feels he was illegally blocked by Denver G Dan Neil. "It was a clip. There's no doubt about it," said Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who said he wanted the league to review the tape for a possible fine against Neil. Denver coach Mike Shanahan defended Neil after watching the play dozens of times Monday. Cox said doctors told him the injury was not going to end his season. Belichick said he won't know how long Cox will be out until he sees what happens over the next two weeks.

He spared no words in describing a block in the third quarter that sidelined him for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. Cox said he went down on a cut block by Denver G Dan Neil. "I was cut on purpose," he said. "I think it was a cheap shot, because I was in a no-cut zone." Cox promised to get even saying he would go after Neil's knee if they ever met again in a game. Neil declined comment after the game.

Paul Kenyon reports for the Providence Journal New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has employed a rotation system at linebacker and in the secondary which seems to be keeping his players fresher. LB Tedy Bruschi has seen his workload cut which has been a shock to his system. Bruschi is now part of a linebacker rotation with Bryan Cox and Ted Johnson, a rotation that allows each player to get some rest. The added depth could be especially useful this week. Sunday's game in Miami, where the temperatures are expected to be in the mid or high 80s. Ty Law, Otis Smith and Terrell Buckley have been sharing time at the corners all season. Matt Stevens and Tebucky Jones have been sharing time at free safety as well.
