Redskins | Hall hoping surgery has him on track

Mon, 19 Jun 2006 05:35:10 -0700

Ryan O'Halloran, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins PK John Hall is hoping surgery in January has him on the right track to a healthy 2006 season. Hall felt his problem was more complex than a quadriceps or groin injury and an evaluation late last season confirmed Hall's suspicions. Hall's surgery repaired muscles that were detached from his pelvis and another muscle he said was "frayed like a rope." Because of those injuries, Hall was overcompensating on his right side, which was a likely source of his hamstring (2004) and quadriceps (2005) ailments. Hall did little kicking during the minicamp, which was by design. During traning camp, Hall will be challenged for his job by PK Tyler Jones. Asked if Hall would have to be markedly outperformed because he's the incumbent, special teams coach Danny Smith said: "Once they're on the field, it's competition and it doesn't really matter where they've come from, who they are or what their credentials are. We'll keep the best guy, period."

Redskins | Jones to join team at offseason workouts Tuesday; will start bid for job

Fri, 19 May 2006 19:34:05 -0700

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins PK Tyler Jones, now kicking in NFL Europe, is expected to join the Redskins for their offseason workouts Tuesday, May 23. Although the odds of making the team appear slim, Jones is eager for a chance to push PK John Hall for the starting job. "I had a pretty good season and I was able to get a lot of good work in and good experience under my belt," Jones said from Amsterdam. Jones has connected on 9 of 12 field goals in NFL Europe and has been perfect on extra points. Jones has excelled on kickoffs, helping Hamburg to have the second-best kickoff coverage in NFL Europe. Kickoffs are of particular importance to the Redskins; head coach Joe Gibbs has said it is unlikely Hall will handle those duties this season.

Bears | Prioritize FG Accuracy for Kickers

Thu, 19 May 2005 11:27:40 -0700

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said the club has prioritized field goal accuracy with their place kicker ahead of kickoff ability. "The main thing for a field goal kicker is to make field goals, particularly once you're inside the 40," Angelo said. "That's the No. 1 critical trait that you look for. Very few kickers are going to be able to do both. You have to declare what you want at that position and we want a guy that can make the field goals." The club has PKs Doug Brien, Paul Edinger, Nick Setta, Tyler Jones and Nick Novak competing for the place-kicking duties this year.

Bears | Lots of Kicking Competition

Thu, 12 May 2005 21:01:22 -0700

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports with the recent signing of PK Doug Brien, the Chicago Bears will likely have five place kickers in training camp competing for the job. Brien will join incumbent PK Paul Edinger, who missed an NFL-high nine field goal attempts last season, and undrafted agent PKs Tyler Jones and Nick Novak. PK Nick Setta, allocated by the Bears to NFL Europe, may also gain a training camp invitation. Though kickoff distance will be a factor in the competition, the Bears will be looking for the kicker who can best convert field goal attempt.

Fri, 29 Apr 2005 07:09:40 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears PK Paul Edinger has adjusted his kicking approach this offseason in hopes of improving his accuracy and consistency this year. "I was approaching the ball a tad different each time,'' Edinger said of previous years. "It all started with my lineup. I'm still standing the same way, but there's no chance of lining up wrong now. If anything else goes wrong, it's something else than what I thought the problem was." The Bears have brought in undrafted rookie free agent PKs Tyler Jones and Nick Novak to compete with Edinger this year. "I expected them to bring guys in,'' Edinger said. "I would have done the same thing. This year there is more competition again. It's the situation I put myself in."
