An involuntary manslaughter charge against unrestricted free-agent DE Charles Grant (Saints) was dropped Friday, May 7, after Grant agreed to plead no contest to a misdemeanor public fighting charge, reports Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Grant will have to pay a $1,000 fine, one-year probation and agreed to pay $20,000 in restitution for the cost of the investigation. Grant was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter because he was allegedly involved in a brawl outside a nightclub that led to the death of a bystander.

While the Saints may want to downplay injuries on defense, they played a significant role in the nose dive the defense took down the stretch. Outside of losing DE Charles Grant (triceps), who was placed on Injured Reserve recently, the Saints will be the healthiest on defense they have been since Week 9.

The Associated Press reports the National Football League wants an appeals court to reconsider a federal judge's order that blocked the suspensions of Minnesota Vikings DL Kevin Williams and DL Pat Williams, New Orleans Saints DL Charles Grant, RB Deuce McAllister and DL Will Smith for violating the league's anti-doping policy, according to court documents filed Monday, Dec. 22, in U.S. District Court in Minnesota. Attorneys for the NFL filed notice they were asking the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to take up the issue after U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul, Minn., earlier this month cleared the way for the five players to continue playing.

New Orleans Saints RB Deuce McAllister and DE Will Smith will be able to play Week 15 but Minnesota Vikings DT Kevin Williams and DT Pat Williams are still in danger of being suspended before their Week 15 game. Saints DE Charles Grant, the other player suspended, is currently on Injured Reserve.

Magnuson said he needed more time to consider the case after hearing hours of arguments from the NFL and the NFL Players Association Friday, Dec. 5. Sports, reports New Orleans Saints DE Charles Grant has been indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges Tuesday, May 20, following a Georgia nightclub fight in February, according to several local area sources. Grant was stabbed during the incident, and Laquient Macklin was charged with felony murder and feticide in the shooting death of Korynda Reed. An Early County, Ga., grand jury indicted several other people involved in the fight in which shots were fired outside the nightclub following an altercation that took place inside the club. The Saints had no immediate comment on the charges or how Grant's status on the team could be affected.
