An involuntary manslaughter charge against unrestricted free-agent DE Charles Grant (Saints) was dropped Friday, May 7, after Grant agreed to plead no contest to a misdemeanor public fighting charge, reports Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Grant will have to pay a $1,000 fine, one-year probation and agreed to pay $20,000 in restitution for the cost of the investigation. Grant was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter because he was allegedly involved in a brawl outside a nightclub that led to the death of a bystander.

The Associated Press reports the National Football League wants an appeals court to reconsider a federal judge's order that blocked the suspensions of Minnesota Vikings DL Kevin Williams and DL Pat Williams, New Orleans Saints DL Charles Grant, RB Deuce McAllister and DL Will Smith for violating the league's anti-doping policy, according to court documents filed Monday, Dec. 22, in U.S. District Court in Minnesota. Attorneys for the NFL filed notice they were asking the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to take up the issue after U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul, Minn., earlier this month cleared the way for the five players to continue playing.

Grant was stabbed during the incident, and Laquient Macklin was charged with felony murder and feticide in the shooting death of Korynda Reed. An Early County, Ga., grand jury indicted several other people involved in the fight in which shots were fired outside the nightclub following an altercation that took place inside the club.
