NFL | League appeals order that blocked five suspensions Tue, 23 Dec 2008 05:36:04 -0800 The Associated Press reports the National Football League wants an appeals court to reconsider a federal judge's order that blocked the suspensions of Minnesota Vikings DL Kevin Williams and DL Pat Williams, New Orleans Saints DL Charles Grant, RB Deuce McAllister and DL Will Smith for violating the league's anti-doping policy, according to court documents filed Monday, Dec. 22, in U.S. District Court in Minnesota. Attorneys for the NFL filed notice they were asking the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals to take up the issue after U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson in St. Paul, Minn., earlier this month cleared the way for the five players to continue playing.

New Orleans Saints RB Deuce McAllister and DE Will Smith will be able to play Week 15 but Minnesota Vikings DT Kevin Williams and DT Pat Williams are still in danger of being suspended before their Week 15 game. Saints DE Charles Grant, the other player suspended, is currently on Injured Reserve.

Magnuson said he needed more time to consider the case after hearing hours of arguments from the NFL and the NFL Players Association Friday, Dec. 5. The five players involved are Minnesota Vikings DL Kevin Williams and DL Pat Williams as well as New Orleans Saints RB Deuce McAllister, DL Charles Grant and DL Will Smith.

The lawsuit, filed with the Federal District Court in Minneapolis, asks for an "immediate injunction" to allow the players to take part in Week 14 games.
