Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons S Kevin Mathis (spine) suffered a possible career-ending spinal injury during the Week 9 game. Mathis was placed on Injured Reserve, ending his 2006 season. Mathis is expected to make a full recovery, but this is his second significant spinal injury in five years. The team did not disclose the specific injury, but they did say Mathis would not need surgery.

George Henry, writing for the Sporting News, reports Atlanta Falcons CB Kevin Mathis (knee) still faces a long road to recovery from major reconstructive knee surgery five months ago. He tore the MCL and PCL and also damaged the posterior capsule. Mathis might find it hard to run, jump and tackle as effectively as he did beforehand. In all likelihood doctors and trainers won't allow him to return to the field with the team until camp opens in July, which would put him behind on the team's depth chart.

ESPN.com reports nine players were fined for their roles in a fight before Monday night's game, Sept. 12, between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons. Falcons' CB Kevin Mathis received a $5,000 fine. Also receiving a $5,000 fine was CB DeAngelo Hall for unsportsmanlike conduct for grabbing an opponent's facemask and then throwing the opponent's helmet. Two Falcons were fined $2,500 for entering a fight area, which made them active participants, S Keion Carpenter and CB/KR Allen Rossum. S Kevin McCadam received a $1,000 fine.

He landed awkwardly during practice Wednesday, Sept. 14. As previously noted he tore his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments and damaged his posterior capsule and his hamstring in his left leg. Surgery will be scheduled soon and he will be placed on the Injured Reserve list. "You hate to lose a player like Kevin because he brings so much to the team on the field and in the locker room," head coach Jim Mora said. "We have to find a way to go on and not make excuses."
