Despite being scorched for 42 points by the lowly San Diego Chargers, do not expect the Minnesota Vikings to make significant changes on the defensive side of the ball. One possibility is that CB Denard Walker will replace CB Ken Irvin (concussion), who was promoted only a week ago. Irvin did suffer a mild concussion in the game that could make the decision to replace him a bit easier.

While the team feels Walker's coverage has been decent, he has struggled in run support. Walker, however, would still play a major role in nickel packages, and would likely get a chance to regain his starting role. A decision is likely to come later this week.

"We decided taking Brian off the field wasn't the answer," Tice said. "He's making too many plays. After your first loss you're emotional. But we calmed down and made the right choice."

The team had considered starting CB Ken Irvin (toe) at the spot he held before his injury, but decided to keep Williams there as he has played well. Irvin, however, will play right cornerback during nickel packages, which the Vikings use up to two-thirds of the time during a game.

Tice said he hopes Irvin can rotate with Williams at the spot during practice Wednesday, Sept. 3. If so, Irvin could start in the Sunday, Sept. 7 season opener against the Green Bay Packers. If he doesn't start, Irvin will play in nickel packages. Irvin dislocated his right big toe in the Aug. 9 exhibition opener. He started practice two weeks ago and had his best day of practice Monday, Sept. 1. "It's something we have to monitor until game time," Tice said. "The more he plays, the more sore it will be. That's just the way that injury is."
