Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports there is a major battle brewing at free safety for the St. Louis Rams. A pair of Rams has emerged as the front-runners for the job. Rookie S O.J. Atogwe started the preseason opener against Chicago and S Michael Hawthorne handled starting duties against the Chargers Sunday, Aug. 21. There are plenty of contenders aiming for the one spot and head coach Mike Martz is monitoring the situation closely. "We have so many strong candidates at the free safety position we just feel like we can move Arch (Adam Archuleta) back to strong," head coach Martz said. "Somebody is going to come out on top."

Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports St. Louis Rams secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer says the competition at safety should be one of the most intense battles of training camp. "I want guys who have a chance to play in the National Football League and we are acquiring those types of players," Schottenheimer said. "We are trying to get as much competition in that area as we possibly can." As reported, SS Michael Stone, CB Michael Hawthorne, FS O.J. Atogwe, and FS Jerome Carter are all expected to try and earn the starting safety spot alongside FS Adam Archuleta.
