Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (concussion) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 6, and has been ruled out for Week 14.
Fantasy Tip: Matt Cassel will be the Vikings' starting quarterback this week. Owners likely have a better option to use over Cassel.
Wed, 04 Dec 2013 11:14:28 -0800
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (concussion) has yet to pass the concussion protocol and will not practice Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Fantasy Tip: Ponder is probably a long shot to return and play in Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens. Matt Cassel will likely start with Josh Freeman as the backup. Only run with Cassel in your starting lineup if you're desperate in leagues that start two QBs.
Wed, 04 Dec 2013 08:35:52 -0800
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (concussion) still isn't cleared to practice, and QB Matt Cassel is likely to start in Week 14.
Mon, 02 Dec 2013 14:08:37 -0800
The Minnesota Vikings are undecided who will start at quarterback in Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens as they await word on whether QB Christian Ponder (concussion) will be healthy enough to play. QB Matt Cassel replaced Ponder in Week 13 against the Chicago Bears and threw for 243 yards, a touchdown and an interception in an overtime victory. If Ponder isn't cleared to start practicing early in the week, the team could be influenced to go in another direction.
Fantasy Tip: Cassel seems to have a pretty good shot of playing against the Ravens if Ponder isn't ready in time. Both Cassel and Ponder should only be considered if you're playing in a league that requires you to start two QBs.
Mon, 02 Dec 2013 09:19:01 -0800
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (concussion) left the team's Week 13 game in the second quarter with a concussion, and his status for Week 14 is uncertain. QB Matt Cassel replaced Ponder in the game and led the team to an overtime win by throwing for 243 yards. Head coach Leslie Frazier said Ponder will be in consideration for the start next weekend if he's healthy.
Fantasy Tip: Prepare to go with backup options if you were relying on Ponder in a league that starts two quarterbacks. He'll have to pass the league-mandated concussion tests this week in order to be cleared to play.
Wed, 20 Nov 2013 09:43:18 -0800
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Christian Ponder will be the starting quarterback Week 12. Frazier said QB Matt Cassel likely will be the No. 2 quarterback, but QB Josh Freeman could also be active for the game.
Fantasy Tip: The Green Bay Packers present a better opportunity for Ponder to succeed, and he's familiar with them, but it's still best to stay away from him unless you're desperate in leagues where you start two QBs.
Sun, 17 Nov 2013 20:00:34 -0800
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier was non-committal when asked Sunday, Nov. 17, who his Week 12 quarterback would be against the Green Bay Packers. QB Christian Ponder was terrible in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks, so QB Matt Cassel or QB Josh Freeman could get another chance.
Fantasy Tip: This is a situation to avoid in all scenarios.
Sat, 16 Nov 2013 17:51:09 -0800
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier would not say if QB Matt Cassel or QB Josh Freeman will be the No. 2 quarterback for the team's Week 11 game but indicated all three quarterbacks on the roster could be active for the game.
Mon, 28 Oct 2013 12:53:31 -0700
The Minnesota Vikings are unsure who their starting quarterback will be in Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys, but it will not be QB Matt Cassel, according to head coach Leslie Frazier. QB Christian Ponder went 14-for-21 for just 145 yards in the team's Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers a week after QB Josh Freeman (concussion) had an embarrassing debut. "I don't want to discount Matt," Frazier said. "But Christian did some good things in that ballgame yesterday. There are some things he can obviously do better, but it has something to do with it. He has led us to some wins in the past." Freeman was able to run over the weekend without concussions symptoms for the first time since being hurt in Week 7.
Fantasy Tip: The decision will probably come down to how healthy Freeman is and if he's cleared from his concussion. Either way, Ponder and Freeman are only desperation options for those in leagues that start two QBs.
Mon, 21 Oct 2013 16:15:21 -0700
The Minnesota Vikings have declared CB A.J. Jefferson, DL Chase Baker, LB Gerald Hodges, OG Jeff Baca, DL Justin Trattou, QB Matt Cassel, WR Rodney Smith inactive for Week 7.

Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman received the first-team repetitions during individual drills during practice Wednesday, Oct. 16. He was followed by QBs Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel.
Mon, 14 Oct 2013 13:50:29 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier did not indicate who would be his starting quarterback in Week 7 against the New York Giants after QB Matt Cassel and company took another defeat in Week 6. "Yeah, I want to go back and evaluate what Matt did in this ballgame and then make a determination as we go this week," Frazier said when asked if he was undecided about his starting quarterback. Cassel went 32-for-44 with 241 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. QB Josh Freeman was inactive, and the team is unsure if he'll have a good enough grip of the offense to start this weekend.
Fantasy Tip: Cassel didn't look very good yesterday, and the team is likely just using him as a placeholder until Freeman is ready to go. It's doubtful that Christian Ponder is an option.
Fri, 11 Oct 2013 12:04:10 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Matt Cassel will be the starting quarterback Week 6.
Thu, 10 Oct 2013 20:38:50 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder said he has been told who the starting quarterback will be for Week 6 but will allow head coach Leslie Frazier make the announcement. Frazier said he will not announce the starter until after practice Friday, Oct. 11. Ponder's body language indicated QB Matt Cassel will start the game.
Thu, 10 Oct 2013 19:22:48 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel received most, if not all, of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, Oct. 10.
Thu, 10 Oct 2013 16:02:20 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder is unhappy with the way things have turned out. QB Matt Cassel had the majority of first-team repetitions in practice Thursday, Oct. 10, and he's expected to start over Ponder in Week 6. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. We'll see how things play out," Ponder said of all the recent developments at quarterback, via Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Some of the dynamics of this organization have changed, obviously ... But I'm preparing like I'm going to be on the field."
Fantasy Tip: Josh Freeman is expected to eventually take over as the starting quarterback once he's up to speed. Ponder basically has no future left in Minnesota at this point.
Thu, 10 Oct 2013 07:10:45 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (ribs) has been cleared to play in Week 6. However, QB Matt Cassel is likely to start again.
Mon, 07 Oct 2013 12:31:16 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Josh Freeman will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job, but QB Christian Ponder (rib) remains the starting quarterback for the time being if he's healthy.
Fantasy Tip: Ponder is still banged up and probably won't hold off Freeman for long. Freeman has the most upside of Ponder and Matt Cassel, too, so expect to see him under center at some point this season once he learns the offense.
Mon, 07 Oct 2013 10:19:28 -0700
The Minnesota Vikings are still listing QB Christian Ponder (rib) as the starting quarterback on their depth chart, even after signing QB Josh Freeman. QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson is likely to be released.
Fantasy Tip: Ponder is on very shaky ground, and he may not even be ready to return in Week 6 following his rib injury. Matt Cassel could receive another start against the Carolina Panthers, but it looks like Freeman may be the long-term solution. This is surely a QB situation to steer clear of.
Wed, 02 Oct 2013 20:18:40 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (rib) is dealing with a fractured rib near his heart, and beat writer Judd Zulgad speculates the injury could keep Ponder out three to four games as a result.
Fantasy Tip: It appears Matt Cassel is in line to start for a while, but he is nothing more than a low-end QB2 in most fantasy formats.
Tue, 01 Oct 2013 11:32:11 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team's starting quarterback job between QBs Christian Ponder (ribs) and Matt Cassel is up in the air because Ponder is still hurt, and he won't be re-evaluated until next week. "It's hard to be concrete when you know Christian is dealing with an injury," Frazier added, "so we'll see what happens."
Fantasy Tip: The team will surely ponder their decision during the Week 5 bye, and we wouldn't be surprised at all to see Cassel starting again in Week 6, even if Ponder is healthy enough to return. Owning either as your backup QB probably isn't the best situation to be in.
Mon, 30 Sep 2013 10:57:48 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team's quarterback is Christian Ponder. Frazier also said the team had a lot of things to talk about over the bye week.
Fantasy Tip: It is a surprise that the team would go back to Ponder after Matt Cassel had a strong outing in leading the team to its first win. It sounds like this is far from resolved at this point.
Sun, 29 Sep 2013 21:23:56 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel made the start in place of the injured QB Christian Ponder (ribs) in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in London. He finished by completing 16 of his 25 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns, completing his final 11 passes.
Fri, 27 Sep 2013 10:35:29 -0700
Several Minnesota Vikings wide receivers, including WR Greg Jennings, have commended QB Matt Cassel and look forward to him starting in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jennings described Cassel as "more verbal, kind of commanding in the huddle." "If anything that's the difference," Jennings said. "That comes with him having much more experience. He's been in position where he's had to be a starter for years now. He knows what's going on. He's commanding. So is Christian. But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is. Matt's a very smart guy."
Fri, 27 Sep 2013 09:51:28 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (rib) said he expects to return as the starter following the team's Week 5 bye to start against the Carolina Panthers Oct. 13. Head coach Leslie Frazier also said that "I don't foresee a quarterback controversy."
Fantasy Tip: As Ben Goessling suggests, if Matt Cassel plays well (he probably doesn't even need to win) this weekend against the Pittsburgh Steelers, there is a realistic chance that Ponder remains benched when he's healthy.
Fri, 27 Sep 2013 05:53:14 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel will start in Week 4 over QB Christian Ponder (ribs).
Fantasy Tip: Cassel has a lot less mobility than Ponder, but he has shown good accuracy and touch in the past. This actually may not be a bad thing for Adrian Peterson if Cassel can manage the game and keep the chains moving. Cassel isn't worth starting except maybe in two-quarterback leagues.
Thu, 26 Sep 2013 10:05:30 -0700
Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said the team wants QB Christian Ponder (ribs) to play in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team will make a decision on whether he'll start Friday, Sept. 27.
Fantasy Tip: There is a pretty good chance that Matt Cassel gets the start in London if Ponder isn't able to play. Ponder shouldn't be in starting lineups even if he makes the start, though. If Cassel starts and plays well, Ponder could find himself second on the depth chart.
Thu, 26 Sep 2013 05:36:34 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (ribs) will get more snaps than Matt Cassel in practice Thursday, Sept. 26. However, the decision on who will start will come after practice Friday, Sept. 27.

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder is believed to be on a short leash in terms of his starting job because QB Matt Cassel has been doing all of the right things.
Wed, 24 Jul 2013 09:15:13 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder must show improvement, and that he is growing as a quarterback. If he struggles this season, the team is not likely to hesitate to go to QB Matt Cassel as its starter. Plenty of people in the league still believe Cassel is underrated, and he could fare well in Minnesota. However, it is Ponder's starting job to lose.
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 14:31:57 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder didn't look good during practice Wednesday, June 19. "Watching Christian Ponder out there, the footwork didn't look great," Judd Zulgad, of 1500ESPN.com, said. "The passes didn't look all that sharp."
Fantasy Tip: This isn't a good start for Ponder, although it's still early in the offseason. The longer he doesn't gel in Bill Musgrave's offense, though, the more we'll hear rumblings that Matt Cassel may take over as the starter. Whoever is under center for Minnesota isn't very intriguing, though, and Greg Jennings and company may find it difficult to see consistent looks in the passing game.
Wed, 19 Jun 2013 10:18:18 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder might be challenged by Matt Cassel for the starting job during the 2013 season.
Fantasy Tip: Neither QB gives us the warm and fuzzies for fantasy value, and with the way Cassel has performed of late, a switch to him wouldn't necessarily present an upgrade, even if Ponder struggles. It could be an ugly year surrounding Adrian Peterson in Minny.
Sat, 20 Apr 2013 21:00:26 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder remains the unquestioned starter entering his third NFL season. However, if he goes into a protracted slump like last season, the coaching staff could be inclined to take a look at QB Matt Cassel, who will make $3.7 million this season even if he doesn't take a snap. Cassel fits the system of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave better than QB Joe Webb, who is expected to serve as the third QB.

Updating a previous item, Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel's deal with the team is for two years and $7.4 million, according to a source. Cassel can void the second year of the deal up to five days after the Super Bowl.
Sat, 16 Mar 2013 17:47:12 -0700
Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel said he understands that he will be the No. 2 quarterback and that QB Christian Ponder will be the team's starting quarterback. "They said they're looking to bring somebody in with experience who could come in and basically be somebody who can step in if need be. The fact of the matter is, again, Christian is the starting quarterback. I think we'll have a great [meeting] room. I'm there to add value. I'm there to help him out in whatever capacity that is, and go from there," Cassel said.

Thu, 14 Mar 2013 12:29:08 -0700
The Minnesota Vikings have signed free-agent QB Matt Cassel (Chiefs). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: Cassel likely will be the No. 2 quarterback unless Christian Ponder struggles. Even if he did get the starting job, he likely would not be a fantasy option because of the team's wide receiver situation.

Updating a previous report, the Arizona Cardinals could show interest in Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel if he is released but would also like to keep QB Kevin Kolb on the roster because head coach Bruce Arians likes him. Cassel likely would not be able to win the starting job because his struggles with deep passes would not fit the team's new offensive system.
