Chiefs | Failed to improve at quarterback?

Wed, 21 Mar 2012 09:38:40 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said he is very comfortable with the team's quarterback tandem of Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn. "I think we have a very good and very competitive quarterback situation. I really do. And it is what it is. You know what I mean? That's the situation we have. And I'm very comfortable with it," Pioli said.

The Chiefs talked about creating better quarterback competition during the start of the offseason, but they just signed Quinn to the mix. They let QB Kyle Orton depart as a free-agent on a three-year, $10.5 million deal that Pioli described as "very, very generous" and they were not in the Peyton Manning derby despite owner Clark Hunt saying to the world the team wanted Manning on board.

Chiefs | Brady Quinn unlikely to push for starting role

Sun, 18 Mar 2012 01:30:06 -0700

The Kansas City Chiefs seemed like they wanted to add competition for QB Matt Cassel this offseason, but the signing of Brady Quinn is unlikely to provide that. Quinn has not played a regular season game during the past two seasons. He does, however, have history with head coach Romeo Crennel from their time together in Cleveland in 2007. Quinn does give the team some stability as a backup quarterback, an area the team has struggled at in recent seasons.

Chiefs | Kyle Orton trying to win job for future

Mon, 19 Dec 2011 20:52:42 -0800

Kansas City Chiefs QB Kyle Orton led the team to a win in Week 15 over the previously unbeaten Green Bay Packers, making the organization's decision on what to do at the position that much more difficult. "If we win these next two games with him, and he continues to play the way he did today, then you might have to say that (Orton is the future)," interim head coach Romeo Crennel said Sunday, Dec. 18. Orton is a free agent after this season and QB Matt Cassel would be heading into the fourth season of a $63 million contract. The team could also sign someone from outside the organization, or draft a high-profile QB, but Orton is trying to make the decision a little more difficult.

Chiefs | Loss of Tony Moeaki hurts offense

Sat, 03 Sep 2011 13:18:30 -0700

If the Kansas City Chiefs do indeed lose second-year TE Tony Moeaki (knee) for the season, it will be a devastating blow to the offense. Moeaki was a favorite target last year of QB Matt Cassel and the Chiefs do not have another reliable pass-catcher at the position on roster. Moeaki hauled in 47 passes as a rookie. The Chiefs would likely be forced to start TE Leonard Pope and likely need to find additional help to the position elsewhere.

Chiefs | Looking for offense to improve quickly

Mon, 29 Aug 2011 01:06:03 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is looking for the team to find success on offense. After three preseason games, the Chiefs are last in the NFL in scoring and yardage on offense; with the NFL season quickly approaching, they are running out of time to correct their issues.

QB Matt Cassel looks like he needs some work. He completed six of his 13 passes for 59 yards against the St. Louis Rams. In three preseason games, he has completed just 44 percent of his passes. "We've got to get him ready, too. I don't want you to think we're taking that aspect of it lightly, either. He's got to continue to get enough time to be ready when the season starts," Haley said of his quarterback. Cassel said he feels like he will be ready to play Week 1.

Chiefs | Matt Cassel adjusting

Fri, 19 Aug 2011 13:18:26 -0700

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel had ups and downs during training camp. He looked better tossing to familiar targets like WR Dwayne Bowe than he did with newcomers like WR Steve Breaston. Cassel said he feels the team is moving in the right direction, but said they are still learning a lot about their team. Due to the lockout, they didn't have time in the offseason to experiment so they are having to work that into training camp now, working with different personnel groups. "From one day to the next, it's different. One day you can be completely on and feel great about how the day went, and there's other days when you're trying new stuff or you're not as sharp as you'd like to be," Cassel said.
