Bills | Matt Cassel could be on the bubble

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 17:48:34 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel could be on the roster bubble if he struggles during training camp. The team would save $4.15 million in salary cap space if he is released.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel will still compete for the starting job during training camp, but he struggled during organized team activities. Cassel likely will not have a lot of fantasy value even if he wins the starting job this season.

Bills | Matt Cassel struggles Wednesday

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 09:53:02 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel threw one interception and almost had two other passes intercepted during practice Wednesday, June 10. Cassel shared first-team reps with QB EJ Manuel during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel will compete with Manuel for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and neither quarterback appears to have a big advantage. Owners probably should consider the winner of the job to be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback this season.

Bills | Still a QB competition in Buffalo

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 15:41:38 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are still competing for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "Wisdom tells me to let I play out, we'll see what happens through the end," Ryan said.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills' quarterback battle could go on well into training camp and the preseason. Whoever ends up starting won't be worth drafting as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

Bills | Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel split reps

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 09:13:56 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel both worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Wednesday, June 3.

Fantasy Tip: Both quarterbacks will be competing for the job during training camp, but it does not appear like either quarterback has an advantage at this point. The winner of the competition likely will not have a lot of fantasy value and probably would be a No. 2 quarterback in leagues.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor garnering praise

Sat, 30 May 2015 05:56:07 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is in the competition to be the starting quarterback as much as anyone else, according to quarterback coach David Lee. Lee added, "I think he has a beautiful throwing motion and I just have to think we've got to see how accurate he is." Head coach Rex Ryan provided Taylor first-team repetitions along with QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel through the first four workouts. "He is an unknown, never played a whole lot in Baltimore," Ryan said. "I think the ability is hard to ignore, some of the things that he has."

Fantasy Tip: Even if he enters Week 1 with the starting gig, Taylor would be nothing more than a fringe No. 2 quarterback. At this point, he doesn't warrant a draft pick outside of cavernous two-QB leagues, but the Buffalo quarterback situation is worth monitoring. There are a lot of weapons attached to the offense, and their strong defense projects to frequently tilt the field advantage in the offense's favor. Plus, rushing yards can bolster a quarterback's fantasy point total in a hurry, and Taylor has the ability to scamper. Continue to check back for updates on Taylor and the QB battle in Buffalo.

Bills | Buffalo QBs receiving equal reps at OTAs

Wed, 27 May 2015 11:37:32 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel were given equal repetitions during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Manuel and Cassel worked with the starters while Taylor and Tuel worked with the backups. Head coach Rex Ryan said he wants to give everyone a fair chance.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel and Manuel are still the two frontrunners for the starting gig, but Taylor has the best chance to give them a run for their money. Whoever starts for the Bills will be a backup fantasy quarterback.

Bills | EJ Manuel part of open competition

Sat, 23 May 2015 20:44:49 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel will all have a chance to win the starting job, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel and Manuel figure to be the main players for the starting gig, but neither should be considered more than a low-end QB2.

Bills | Matt Cassel to be backup?

Fri, 15 May 2015 16:32:06 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel is likely to enter Week 1 of the season as the team's backup quarterback, in the opinion of The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci. He also thinks head coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Greg Roman are open-minded about QB EJ Manuel and will give him a fair shot to compete for a starting job this summer. If Cassel or QB Tyrod Taylor win the starting job, the Bills would be expected to trade Manuel before outright cutting him.

Fantasy Tip: Until we know who the starter is in Buffalo, you can turn your head the other way. Whoever does wind up starting in Week 1 will probably be considered undraftable in standard fantasy leagues, anyway.

Bills | Three Buffalo QBs receive equal reps

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 14:12:11 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor each took an equal amount of snaps Tuesday, April 28, at the team's voluntary minicamp. Head coach Rex Ryan didn't name a favorite, saying all three could be [starting] NFL quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever starts for the Bills will have Sammy Watkins and Percy Harvin to throw to and LeSean McCoy behind them, so the supporting cast is there. However, none of the three warrant starter consideration on fantasy squads.

Bills | Matt Cassel has high hopes

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 16:25:10 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel believes the talent in Buffalo exceeds that of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs squad he was a part of. "We've got all the pieces to the puzzle here to be a successful football team… Our offense has the best skill players in all the league in my opinion."

Fantasy Tip: Cassel can think what he wants, but the Bills certainly don't have the best quarterback corps in the league, which will hinder the rest of the offense to an extent; whether Cassel or EJ Manuel wins the starting quarterback job, neither are worthy of starter consideration for fantasy teams.

Bills | All four Buffalo QBs to get first-team reps

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 13:06:22 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will all receive first-team repetitions in workouts, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills possess one of the least exciting quarterback groups in all the NFL. Manuel and Cassel are the favorite heading into the offseaon. Whoever wins the starting job will have minimal fantasy value, however.

Bills | No leader for BUF quarterback job

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 10:06:36 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel will receive a fair shot to win the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "I'm lining them up to literally have a competition for the position," Ryan said. "People will say, 'Well, is this guy ahead of the other?' There's going to be assumptions, but the great thing is, let it play out. Give both guys the opportunity and then at the end of the day, the cream will rise to the top. It usually does." Ryan did not rule out the possibility of QB Tyrod Taylor winning the job.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel and Cassel likely will be the two main candidates for the job and will compete for the job during training camp. The winner of the job should be seen as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

Bills | Rex Ryan expects competition at QB

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 10:46:30 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor will compete for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel and Cassel appear to be the most likely candidates to win the starting job, but Taylor could have a shot depending on his work in the offense. Owners should consider whoever wins the starting job as a No. 2 fantasy quarterback next season.

Bills | Matt Cassel will have shot to start

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 21:43:29 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel will have a chance to win the starting quarterback job in training camp and the preseason. Head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, March 20, that the quarterback competition will be open. "It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there," Ryan said. "We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like (QB Matt Cassel). He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him."

Fantasy Tip: Cassel hasn't been a fantasy option in quite some time, but if he were come in and steal the show, he could re-emerge as a decent fantasy backup option in standard leagues. He would also have some value in FantasyScore when the matchup is favorable.

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 15:43:27 -0800

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel was traded to the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, March 4. The Bills swapped their 2015 fifth-round pick for the Vikings 2015 sixth-round draft pick. Minnesota will also receive a 2016 seventh-round draft pick.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel will be in contention with EJ Manuel for the starting quarterback position. Neither one is a legitimate option as a starting fantasy quarterback.

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 09:39:08 -0800

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (Vikings) has not been told yet whether Vikings general manager Rick Spielman wants to bring Cassel back in 2015.

Vikings | Matt Cassel to go under knife

Fri, 26 Sep 2014 08:15:20 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (foot) is scheduled to undergo foot surgery Friday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel is on Injured Reserve, and this is Teddy Bridgewater's team. With byes starting, he'll have some value as a potential matchup play, but he's clearly not yet an every-week starter.

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 07:55:20 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (foot) likely has a Lisfranc fracture or dislocation that will require surgery, in the opinion of Dr. David J. Chao, a former NFL head team physician.

Fantasy Tip: Teddy Bridgewater will be the team's quarterback moving forward. His value is limited to dynasty leagues for now, but he could serve as a bye-week replacement in favorable matchups.

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 13:10:06 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (foot) will see a foot specialist Thursday, Sept. 25, after he broke several bones in his left foot in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel won't start in Week 4. That much we know. Teddy Bridgewater will be a risky play at FantasyScore against the Falcons.

Vikings | Matt Cassel has broken foot

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 14:44:06 -0700

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (foot) has several fractured bones in his foot, head coach Mike Zimmer said Sunday, Sept. 21, after the Week 3 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: With Cassel sidelined, the head coach said Teddy Bridgewater will take over as the starting quarterback. In standard fantasy leagues, he is a low-end QB2 at best. In FantasyScore for Week 4, Bridgewater could be a very intriguing option if the price is right.

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 10:52:53 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel (toe) was carted off the field in Week 3 after suffering a toe injury. He is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Teddy Bridgewater has replaced Cassel and could keep the job if he plays well. Neither quarterback likely would be a good choice on FantasyScore at this point.

Vikings | Matt Cassel to remain starter

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 23:30:45 -0700

Despite throwing four interceptions in a 30-7 loss to the New England Patriots Sunday, Sept. 14, Minnesota Vikings QB Matt Cassel will remain the starter. "As I've said before, I'm going to hold the quarterback position just like every position here to the same standard," Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. "And I also said I wasn't going to have a quick hook. Matt needs to play better. It's pretty obvious he needs to play better."

Fantasy Tip: You may want to stay away from Cassel in FantasyScore contests as he could get the hook if the Vikings continue losing. His performance does not merit the cost (which was $5,200 in Week 2). Spend the money on a quarterback of similar price who isn't likely to get the quick hook, like New York Jets QB Geno Smith ($5,200).

Vikings | Christian Ponder saves job?

Fri, 29 Aug 2014 18:22:02 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder had a solid training camp and likely saved his job with significant work and production in the preseason finale. He might have some value if the team is not ready to put QB Teddy Bridgewater onto the field and they need someone to fill in for QB Matt Cassel.

Mon, 25 Aug 2014 06:52:30 -0700

Sun, 24 Aug 2014 09:32:02 -0700

The Minnesota Vikings are not ready to name QB Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback at this point, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater struggles in practice

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 10:00:31 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater tossed three interceptions and had two more passes that were almost picked off in practice Monday, Aug. 11. Head coach Mike Zimmer plans to talk with the other coaches to determine how they'll use their quarterbacks in the second preseason game. QB Matt Cassel will start the game after playing just the first series in the first preseason game. Bridgewater played around two quarters and was 6-for-13 with 49 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Bridgewater's mediocre preseason debut and his struggles in practice have held in check much of the optimism that the Vikings have had for Bridgewater in training camp. It reminds all of those over zealous drafters that Bridgewater is still a rookie, and this is definitely Cassel's job to lose.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater closing gap

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 22:43:49 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater saw reps with the first-team offense in practice Wednesday, July 30. According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, QB Matt Cassel appears to lead the race for the starting quarterback job, but Bridgewater has closed the gap.

Fantasy Tip: The starting QB job in Minneapolis will be a heated battle through training camp and the preseason. The winner of the battle might emerge as a useful QB2 in most fantasy leagues, especially if WR Cordarrelle Patterson is everything as advertised this season.

Vikings | QBs splitting reps

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 10:12:46 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder have been evenly splitting reps during the early part of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner will split the reps two ways after the team's upcoming off day.

Fantasy Tip: It appears Cassel is the leading candidate for the starting job at this point but all three are still options for the job. Cassel likely would be a desperation matchup play if he wins the starting job. Bridgewater and Ponder likely would not have much fantasy value even if they win the job.

Vikings | Christian Ponder has done well

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 20:17:34 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QBs Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel saw a majority of the snaps during spring workouts, but QB Christian Ponder has a chance to start, and head coach Mike Zimmer claims it will be a fair competition. "Actually, I think Christian has done a very good job in the time that we've had him and how much he has improved in that amount of time," Zimmer said. "We're going to give everyone a fair shot, and preseason games will help determine it. We want someone who is going to take care of the football, lead the team in the right direction and when called upon be able to win football games."

Vikings | OC praises QBs

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 10:06:42 -0700

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has been very happy with QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder heading up to training camp. "We've got a really, really good group," he said, explaining that it won't be hard to parcel out snaps in the apparent three-headed battle. Cassel is expected to be the starter, but Turner has praised Bridgewater for his arm strength and quick learning.

Fantasy Tip: Turner's vertical passing scheme is usually good news for his quarterbacks. However, the vet Cassel is unlikely to be a difference-maker for your fantasy squad as anything more than a midrange QB2. Bridgewater is expected to eventually take this job.

Vikings | Matt Cassel expected to be starter

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 12:08:35 -0700

USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero thinks it would be a shock if QB Matt Cassel isn't named the starter in training camp next month.

Fantasy Tip: We'd be a bit surprised, too, if either Teddy Bridgewater or Christian Ponder open the season as the Vikes' starter. Cassel isn't an ideal backup QB for your fantasy squad, though, because he could quickly lose his job early in the year if he's ineffective.

Vikings | QB competition wide open

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 11:32:09 -0700

The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition this offseason is a wide open battle between QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner will plan on having all three passers see enough snaps in mandatory minicamp to make sure that they all have a "legitimate opportunity" to win the starting job in training camp next month. Zimmer won't rush into a decision, and he made it clear that Cassel won't enter camp as the presumptive starter. Both Cassel and Bridgewater had more snaps than Ponder during organized team activities, and both looked sharper than Ponder.

Fantasy Tip: If the Vikings play it safe, Cassel should be expected to enter Week 1 as the starter. However, Bridgewater is completely capable of winning the starting job, and he'd probably have the most upside immediately of the rookie passers in the league if he's starting. Whoever starts in Minny, though, is a shaky backup QB for your fantasy squad.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater fine with backup role

Fri, 06 Jun 2014 09:14:41 -0700

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater said he'd be fine with serving in a backup role in his rookie season. Bridgewater missed only three passes all day during organized team activities Thursday, June 5, and marched the team down the field during the two-minute drill. He had some first-team snaps Thursday, but QB Matt Cassel had the majority of the starting repetitions and is expected to enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. "Right now, I'm just learning from Matt." Bridgewater said. "He's a veteran right now, and I notice the things that he's doing when he's in the huddle. I'm taking notes from him and Christian also. Those guys have had past success."

Fantasy Tip: The Vikes have no reason to rush Bridgewater into the starting role with Cassel around. We fully expect Cassel to be the starter in Week 1, but Bridgewater has a decent chance of unseating him at some point if Cassel doesn't get the job done.

Sun, 25 May 2014 12:04:20 -0700

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater third on depth chart

Mon, 19 May 2014 09:53:42 -0700

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said QB Teddy Bridgewater is currently third on the depth chart behind QBs Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder, but the rookie will see first-team repetitions during organized team activities starting May 28. "(Bridgewater) is throwing the ball good," Zimmer said. "I think he's got a good presence, a good command of the way he's taking things. It was good for him to be out here with the veteran quarterbacks a little bit last week for a few days."

Fantasy Tip: Bridgewater has a long way to go if he's to win the starting job for Week 1 of the regular season, but it's entirely possible given the admiration the coaching staff has for him. Heading into his rookie season, though, consider Bridgewater nothing more than a QB3.
