SF49ers.com reports the San Francisco 49ers brought in 10 free agents for a tryout session Tuesday, Dec. 9. Those players who auditioned were: WR Bosley Allen, CB Alan Amundson, S Terrence Carroll, CB Tim Carter, C Crance Clemons, WR Herb Haygood, RB Maurice Hicks, DE Ladairis Jackson, WR Jermaine Lewis and WR Kenyatte Morgan. It is likely the 49ers will be looking to sign a wide receiver with WR Arnaz Battle (toe) out for the remainder of the season with a toe injury.

The Sun Herald reports six New Orleans Saints players who missed practice Thursday, sat out Friday as well. They are: CB Kevin Mathis (neck), CB Keyuo Craver (separated shoulder), RB Jeff Chaney (calf), RB Ricky Williams (hamstring), OL Jeff Chase (left foot) and CB Tim Carter (biceps).

The Advocate reports the New Orleans Saints defense may have a different look this weekend, as LB Keith Mitchell (foot), DT Norman Hand (foot) and DBs Kevin Mathis (neck), Fred Weary (knee) and Michael Hawthorne (back) are all unlikely to play. That would open the door for more playing time, and possible starts, for CBs Steve Israel and Tim Carter. As reported, LB Sedrick Hodge would start at linebacker if Mitchell can't play and Martin Chase and Kenny Smith would see more time on the defensive line due to Hand's continued problems.

Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune reports for the Sporting News New Orleans Saints CB Kevin Mathis (cervical spine injury) will not play this weekend. CBs Fred Weary (bruised right knee) and Michael Hawthorne (sprained right foot) will be questionable for next week. Their injuries leave the team with only three healthy corners, Fred Thomas, Steve Israel and rookie Tim Carter. FB Terrelle Smith (strained back) will likely miss the season finale. The injury is not related to the disc problems that plagued Smith last season. DT Norman Hand (right foot sprain) also looks to be finished for the season.

The Times-Picayune reports the Saints have signed CB Tim Carter to their practice squad. Carter spent training camp with the Saints but was released Aug. 28. He takes the roster spot occupied by TE Scot Osborne, who was signed to the Bills active roster Wednesday.

The Times-Picayune reports New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett said the team had a good ending to their recent workouts on Thursday. Haslett was most pleased with the way the team made few errors while learning a new scheme on both sides of the ball. Haslett said CB Tim Carter has done a great job filling in for Steve Israel and he envisions a great battle at cornerback when Israel returns to full-speed.
