Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley has been dialed in during offseason activities, according to tight end coach Jerry Fontenot. "He seems like he's really dialed in. As far as expectations go, I didn't set any expectations last year, we just wanted to continue to improve each and every week, and that's the same mentality we're taking this year let's get better, let's find a starting point and let's get better each and every week. We're capable of doing great things," Fontenot said. "I think we definitely had a year to grow off of last year and the way we finished off the year, I'm happy with where we're starting. But again, we have a long ways to go."

Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports free agent C Jerry Fontenot is expected to sign a one-year contract to return the New Orleans Saints. Fontenot has started the past seven seasons with the Saints, but will likely play in a backup role under the new deal. "Playing backup is not a problem, and if that's the way things end up with the Saints, I have no problem with that," said Fontenot. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said he offered a one-year deal to Fontenot on Tuesday, May 4, but he had yet to hear back from Fontenot's agent, Tony Agnone. As of Thursday, May 6, Fontenot was seeking an option year to his contract with Saints team officials.

According to Pete Prisco of SportsLine.com the New Orleans Saints have reached a contract agreement with free agent C Bubba Miller (Eagles). He will sign a one-year, $750,000 contract that will count $450,000 against the team's 2002 cap. It is expected he will compete with C Jerry Fontenot for the starting center position in training camp. The Saints agreed to extend the deal if Miller were to become a starter in 2002. Miller is still not completely healed from his 2001 broken fibula, but he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

OT Spencer Folau can play guard but is working exclusively at right tackle and he will probably start the first game when Riley serves his one-game suspension. Bentley, who played two years at center and one each at guard and tackle at Ohio State, has been impressive during the team's first four practices and appears to be the favorite over OL Tutan Reyes to start at right guard.

The AP reports New Orleans Saints second-round draft pick, OL LeCharles Bentley of Ohio State, is expected to be an understudy at center to incumbent C Jerry Fontenot, who has been in the league 14 years. "I know his game and I look forward to working with him and learning from him,'' Bentley said. "But wherever they put me is fine with me." DE Joe Johnson has a strained left tricep, LT Willie Roaf is trying to play on two aching knees, C Jerry Fontenot and CB Kevin Mathis have neck injuries, and RB Ricky Williams has a banged up left shoulder. Jim Mashek reports for the Sun Herald the New Orleans Saints, especially QB Aaron Brooks, came through in a big way in today's victory over the Colts. For the Colts, it was a big loss. "We didn't want to be 4-5; 5-4 would sound a lot better," Colts QB Peyton Manning said. Brooks had a polished 19-for-22 passing performance that produced a 34-20 victory. Brooks got the ball to Saints WR Joe Horn eight times and he threw two TDs to rookie TE Eddie Williams. Brooks earned a measure of respect from his teammates with today's performance. "It's pretty evident that Aaron is improving," Saints center Jerry Fontenot said.
