Panthers.com reports the Carolina Panthers retired LB Sam Mills' No. 51 at halftime of their preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13. Mills passed away in April from cancer at the age of 45.

The Associated Press reports former NFL LB Sam Mills will have his number added to the Superdome Wall of Fame during a pregame ceremony before the New Orleans Saints home opener September 18. Mills' No. 51 will be added to the wall.

Panthers.com reports the Carolina Panthers will retire jersey No. 51 in memory of deceased LB Sam Mills. The event will take place at halftime when Carolina hosts the Washington Redskins on August 13. "Sam will always have a special place in the history of the Panthers," said team president Mark Richardson, who provided one of the eulogies at Mills' memorial service. "His contributions as a player and coach are unique in our team's short history, but I expect they will be just as meaningful and significant many years in the future. He was an extraordinary man who is the model for all those who follow him with the Panthers."

NewOrleansSaints.com reports the New Orleans Saints are planning to honor the late Sam Mills at a yet-to-be-determined date during the season, according to Arnold Fielkow, the team's executive vice president of administration. Mills, who played linebacker with the Saints, lost his lengthy battle with intestinal cancer in April.

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports former Carolina Panthers linebacker and position coach Sam Mills has lost his lengthy battle with intestinal cancer Monday, April 18, according to several league sources. He was 45. Mills was initially diagnosed with the illness in August of 2003.
