Bears | Team must develop an NFL-caliber receiving corps

Sun, 23 Jul 2006 09:59:22 -0700

Bob LeGere, of the Daily Herald, reports one challenge facing the Chicago Bears in 2006 is to develop an NFL-caliber receiving corps. Aside from aging WR Muhsin Muhammad, the Bears don't have any special receivers. The rest of the wide receivers are heavy on potential but, so far, light on production. WR Mark Bradley appeared on the verge of stardom as a rookie last season when he suffered a torn ACL last Oct. 30. If Bradley is back to 100 percent, he could be a solid No. 2 wide receiver for the team. Currently, WR Bernard Berrian is listed as the team's second wide receiver. WR Justin Gage was the team's second-leading receiver last year, but he needs to take another step in his fourth season or he will be passed up by younger players such as WR Airese Currie, another deep threat who missed all of his rookie season with injuries, and WR Rashied Davis, who is converting from cornerback. According to wide receivers coach Darryl Drake, there are several players in the mix.

He really hasn't had a lot of time to demonstrate that, so right now we're not sure. ... But it's just a matter of us having him out there so we can see him."

Bears | L. Smith discusses No. 2 WR spot

Fri, 26 May 2006 17:47:26 -0700

ChicagoBears.com reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith was asked about the team's No. 2 wide receiver spot and he replied: "Bernard Berrian finished very strong last year, so going in Bernard will get a long look. Mark Bradley was the starter before he went down. Airese Currie has outstanding speed. So it's hard to say. We have a good group of guys. We need a No. 2 receiver, but three receivers play quite a bit. I think we're going to like all five of the receivers that we keep this year. If you asked me what will be the most competitive position that we have, I would start off with that No. 1."
