Mike Chappell, writing for the Sporting News, reports there will be an interesting battle in training camp for the team's No. 2 and No. 3 tight end behind starting TE Dallas Clark. TEs Bryan Fletcher, Ben Utecht and Ben Hartsock will lead the battle for the No. 2 and No. 3 roles. Unheralded longshots include TEs Joey Hawkins and Corey Roberts. Fletcher ended the 2005 as the No. 2 tight end and will be hard to unseat.

John Oehser, of Colts.com, reports Texas Tech head basketball coach Bob Knight was instrumental in getting Indianapolis Colts rookie TE Joey Hawkins a tryout with the team after he went undrafted. "I had missed the (Texas Tech) Pro Day because I was at the Big 12 Tournament, and I missed the (NFL Scouting) Combine because I was playing basketball," said Hawkins, who played basketball and football at Texas Tech. "I guess (Knight) figured because I sacrificed that stuff for him, he wanted to help me out." After the draft, Knight phoned two of his close friends, Colts president Bill Polian and Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, to tell them about Hawkins. Hawkins worked out for both teams before eventually signing with Indianapolis.

John Oehser, of Colts.com, reports Indianapolis Colts rookie TE Joey Hawkins continues to adjust to the team's sophisticated offensive schemes. "I'm used to running pass routes 80 percent of the time," said Hawkins. "I'm comfortable with a lot of the things we do here, but it's associating those concepts with the names of the plays. It's a lot more complex, the things they do here, obviously. Plus, the guys here are a lot faster. That makes it more difficult as well." Hawkins played in a pass-happy offense at Texas Tech.

"You can't ignore what he's done," Moore said of Hawkins. "If you've seen our summer school practices, you see we've got guys there who can make plays."

"The whole tight end situation is as positive as it could possibly be," Moore said. TEs Dallas Clark, Ben Hartsock, Ben Utecht, Bryan Fletcher and Joey Hawkins will all be competing for playing time during training camp.
