The Associated Press reports Carolina Panthers WR Donald Hayes (shoulder) will miss four-to-six weeks after fracturing his shoulder last week at the team's minicamp. Panthers head coach John Fox said he expects Hayes to return for the start of training camp on July 30. Hayes felt pain in his shoulder during the final practice last week, and tests over the weekend revealed he had a fracture.

Head coach Jack Del Rio said that it was by design, as Smith is the only Jaguars receiver to be assured a starting job when the season starts. The bulk of the workload was handled by WRs J.J. The Providence Journal reports the New England Patriots will release WR Donald Hayes after he refused to take a pay cut. “The Patriots came to us about a week ago and requested that Donald take a significant pay cut,” said Hayes’ agent, Rick Smith. “We agreed to disagree. We just couldn’t come up with a number to agree on.” The move will only cost the Patriots $500,000 against their 2003 salary cap and will save them $1.5 million.

The team did not bring him in for a visit, but they did not have a visit from last year's first-round pick, DL Richard Seymour, either. Reed could be on the board when New England picks at No. 32 Saturday. Asked if Reed would feel he was done wrong if he didn't go until late in the first round, Dogra said, "I don't think he'd have any problem with that whatsoever. It seems like he's slotted anywhere from 22 to 35." Despite adding WR Donald Hayes, the Pats could stil bite on Reed.
