Tampa Bay Rays C Robinson Chirinos (wrist) is not being allowed to play in Venezuelan Winter League games, per the team's request, as they want him to focus on his rehab from a broken right wrist. Tampa Bay expects him to be ready for spring training.

The Tampa Bay Rays are likely to pick up SP James Shields' $7.5 million option and RP Kyle Farnsworth's $3.3 million option for the 2012 season Monday, Oct. 31. The team is likely to buy out C Kelly Shoppach for $300,000, which would make him a free agent. Shoppach could still re-sign, especially if the team isn't sold on Cs Jose Lobaton and Robinson Chirinos.

Tampa Bay Rays C Robinson Chirinos (wrist) suffered a broken bone near his right wrist while playing winter ball in Venezuela and will be out for four to six weeks. Chirinos fractured the fifth metacarpal bone in his wrist and will be out until December. Chirinos is expected to compete with Cs John Jaso and Jose Lobaton for playing time next year.

The Tampa Bay Rays optioned C Robinson Chirinos to Triple-A Durham Thursday, Aug. 18. The team will activate C John Jaso (oblique) from the disabled list Friday, Aug. 19.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said he wants to see C Robinson Chirinos face a left-handed pitcher at some point, but they're likely to stick with C Kelly Shoppach in the role for now.

Tampa Bay Rays C Robinson Chirinos tied the game with a pinch-hit single in the 11th inning Thursday, Aug. 4, and then won the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Tampa Bay Rays C Robinson Chirinos has been working on making adjustments to his swing with hitting coach Derek Shelton, focusing on seeing the ball sooner. Chirinos is starting his swing earlier, which has given him a "better chance to see the ball and have a better swing." He clubbed his first career home run Wednesday, Aug. 3.
