Wed, 25 Jan 2006 21:13:38 -0800 Jonathan D. Silver, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports former NFL OG Terry Long's death has been ruled a suicide. Toxicology tests and other evidence showed Long committed suicide by drinking antifreeze, but the Allegheny County medical examiner's office also found head trauma that contributed to Long's death. Dr. Bennet Omalu, a neuropathologist at the office, argued that Mr. Long's head injuries as a football player helped cause depression severe enough to make him commit suicide.
Tue, 13 Sep 2005 22:17:38 -0700 The Tribune-Review reports repeated blows to the head during former NFL OL Terry Long's eight-year career led to a brain inflammation that killed the former Pittsburgh Steelers guard in June, Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht said Tuesday, Sept. 13. Long's death was caused by cerebral meningitis that resulted from "repeated mild traumatic brain injuries while playing football,'' Wecht said.
Wed, 08 Jun 2005 19:59:00 -0700 Steelers.com reports Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II has released a statement regarding the passing of former OG Terry Long Tuesday, June 7. "The entire Steelers organization is saddened by the unexpected death of Terry Long," Rooney wrote. "Terry was a very good player and extremely hard worker throughout his playing career. He will be missed by his former teammates and co-workers who enjoyed his camaraderie as part of the Steelers family. Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Terry's family at this difficult time." Long was 45.
Tue, 07 Jun 2005 21:33:54 -0700 The Associated Press reports former Pittsburgh Steelers OG Terry Long has died at the age of 45. The coroner will perform an autopsy on Wednesday, June 8, because the cause of Long's death was not immediately clear. Foul play was not suspected, a deputy coroner said. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Wed, 30 Mar 2005 05:06:58 -0800 ESPN.com reports former Pittsburgh Steelers OG Terry Long has been indicted for fraudulently securing loans for a chicken-processing plant that he eventually burned to the ground for insurance money in September of 2003. In addition, after Long was released on bond from the federal charge, he remained in the Allegheny County Jail after it was learned that Missouri officials had a warrant for his arrest on a felony theft charge involving a bad check. Long will be arraigned on the federal charges April 5. Long played for the Steelers from 1984 to 1991.
