Patriots | Danny Amendola gets on same page with Tom Brady

Tue, 21 May 2013 11:49:27 -0700

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is working on getting on the same page with QB Tom Brady. The two worked out together earlier in the offseason in California and are now taking part in organized team activities. "I said it today; he darted me in the chest with one ball, and inside my head I was like, 'Wow, this guy can really wing it,'" Amendola said after Tuesday's practice. "That's why he's Tom Brady."

Patriots | More on Tom Brady

Mon, 20 May 2013 09:45:13 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady started working with former major league pitcher and quarterback tutor Tom House this offseason, and Brady feels his mechanics are better than ever. "The same way Tom Martinez was always there to watch and give me corrections, Tom House has told me why certain corrections need to be made," Brady said. "Look at a baseball swing and a golf swing. It's all mechanics. Look at how Barry Bonds swings. Look at how Floyd Mayweather punches. Mechanics. When you've got to fit it into the tightest windows, mechanics are crucial."

Fantasy Tip: Brady will be entering his age-36 season in 2013, but he still remains one of the more consistent and successful quarterbacks in the league. At some point, though, we'll see his numbers decline, and this year seems like a good bet for that, especially with Rob Gronkowski (forearm, back) and Aaron Hernandez (knee) banged up heading into the season. Aside from Danny Amendola, Brady doesn't have as many proven weapons in the passing game. Regardless, he'll go as a QB1 in most drafts.

Patriots | Tom Brady flinches under pressure?

Tue, 07 May 2013 05:42:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers FS Ryan Clark said New England Patriots QB Tom Brady struggles when he does not have time to throw the football. "When Tom Brady gets pressure and when you're man-to-man and bumping those guys and making it hard for him to throw, he sees ghosts," Clark said. "Even when guys aren't around him, even when he's not about to be sacked, when his clock goes off in his head that the ball should be out, we'll see him duck, we'll see him flinch. When you get Tom Brady doing that, the whole New England Patriots mystique goes away." Clark added the Patriots have their fair share of fragile players, including offseason addition WR Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Owner didn't want Tom Brady to play elsewhere

Mon, 04 Mar 2013 05:52:44 -0800

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said he didn't want to see a situation develop with QB Tom Brady where he played for another team. "I just didn't want to ever see this become like Joe Montana leaving San Francisco, Emmitt Smith leaving Dallas, Brett Favre leaving Green Bay, Peyton Manning leaving Indianapolis. If Tom Brady played out this current contract and left us, there was no doubt in my mind that someone out there would pay him top dollar, and they should, for this ability, his leadership and his unselfishness," Kraft said. Kraft went on to note that he was trying to stay ahead of the curve, but added the team doesn't have the ability to pay a single player 18 to 20 percent of the salary cap.

Kraft said the team and Brady are both taking a chance making this longer-term commitment with the new three-year, $27 million extension. "Hopefully we have an elite quarterback that, even if his skills decline even a little bit, he'll still be better than 90 percent of the quarterbacks in the league," Kraft said.

Mon, 04 Mar 2013 05:51:37 -0800

He also denied speculation that Brady agreed to the deal after being assured unrestricted free-agent WR Wes Welker would receive some of the money the Patriots saved on Brady's deal. "This is a real deal. Look at our track record. We don't do fake deals. The contract we have with Tom Brady is a real contract we will both live by," Kraft said.

Patriots | Tom Brady contract update

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 04:12:57 -0800

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady nearly doubled the guaranteed money owed him over the next five seasons, according to a league source who has reviewed the documents. Brady was under contract to the Patriots for two seasons with a contract containing $30 million in guarantees. Now, he's under contract for five seasons with $57 million guaranteed for injury. Brady's deal includes a $30 million signing bonus, which will be paid out over a period that extends to Feb. 15, 2015, according to a league source. Brady's salaries for 2013 and 2014 are now $1 million and $2 million, respectively, and are fully guaranteed. His salaries for 2015, 2016 and 2017 are $7 million, $8 million and $9 million, respectively, and are fully guaranteed for injury only, meaning that if Brady is released because of an injury, he will still be paid that money.

Former NFL LB and current analyst Willie McGinest said New England Patriots QB Tom Brady should sit down and talk with TE Rob Gronkowski about his behavior off the field. Patriots | Should Tom Brady throw less in 2013?

Mon, 28 Jan 2013 06:23:44 -0800

The New England Patriots may have to consider reducing QB Tom Brady's workload. He threw the ball 637 times this season, the most in his career, and his numbers took somewhat of a dip in 2012. Brady's completion percentage of 63 percent was his lowest percentage since 2006. The percentage of his passes that went for touchdowns dropped to 5.3, his lowest number since 2009. His average yards per pass was 7.6, his lowest since 2008. Brady also struggled in the final month of the season, completing 58.5 percent of his passes in December and averaging seven yards per pass. He had 10 touchdowns but also five interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Brady finished the season fourth in passing yards (4,827), touchdown passes (34) and passing yards per game (302); however, it would not be a stretch to suggest the team rely less on the passing game in 2013, at least to succeed in the playoffs. Backs Stevan Ridley (who had a breakout campaign in 2012) and Shane Vereen appear ready to carry an even greater offensive load. An effective ground game will only continue to benefit Brady and the receivers in the passing game.

Patriots | Running game has been key

Thu, 13 Dec 2012 04:56:20 -0800

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady credits the team's running game for their ability to be an explosive offense this season. With the threat of a solid run game, Brady has been able to exploit defenses through the air with playaction. "I think for the most part when you playaction pass, you better be able to run the ball," Brady said when asked about the variables that go into a successful play-fake. "That's the most important thing. The threat of handing off the ball ... if we run the ball for 150 yards a game, it's hard for teams not to think about stopping our run game. That's what makes us an effective offense. If you hand it off and gain two yards, the playaction pass isn't going to be very good."
