Mon, 17 Jun 2013 17:16:03 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw off the mound Monday, June 17. "He went out and threw a little bit off the mound; I think it was just fastball-changeup," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I spoke with him. He felt good. He seemed to be very positive."
Sun, 16 Jun 2013 19:00:41 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) will throw another side session, and the club will then decide if he is ready to begin a minor league rehab assignment.
Tue, 11 Jun 2013 15:54:20 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) was scheduled to test his arm on Monday, June 10, but manager Clint Hurdle said there were "complications" on Sunday, June 9, when the left-hander threw soft toss. The Monday side session became moot. Fantasy Tip: It's probably good that the Pirates have a chance to play it safe with the Magic Wandy, but it also sounds like the injury could be more serious than they hoped. Stay tuned.
Tue, 11 Jun 2013 13:16:35 -0700 The Pittsburgh Pirates placed SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list with forearm tightness and selected the contract of SP Gerrit Cole from Triple-A Indianapolis. Fantasy Tip: Cole will start tonight and should be picked up wherever possible, though his performance may determine the length of his major league stay. Rodriguez is in the middle of a solid year and should be stashed wherever possible.
Fri, 07 Jun 2013 11:03:33 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Monday, June 10, to decide if the team will need to place him on the disabled list. Manager Clint Hurdle said Rodriguez has no "acute structural damage to the ligament" in his forearm. Rodriguez is 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 12 starts this season. Fantasy Tip: Gerrit Cole could come up and make his major league start Tuesday. If he does, he's worth snatching up in all fantasy formats.
Fri, 07 Jun 2013 09:52:48 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole is likely to make his major league debut Tuesday, June 11. Fantasy Tip: Cole is pretty polished and can hit triple digits with his fastball. The former UCLA star has a four-pitch repertoire that gives him a good shot to be successful in his initial taste of the bigs. It's unknown how long he'll stay up, but if Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) lands on the disabled list, he should see at least two or three starts, and maybe more. He should be given a shot in most leagues.
Wed, 05 Jun 2013 10:09:10 -0700 Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) left his start at the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, June 5, with "tightness in his left forearm," according to the club. Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will await word on the severity of the injury. This could be something that just requires extensive rest, or it could be a symptom of a much bigger issue. As mentioned, the Bucs have a few possible ways to replace Rodriguez in the rotation in the long term.
Wed, 05 Jun 2013 09:59:31 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (undisclosed) left the club's game at the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, June 5, with an apparent arm injury. The left-hander had faced four batters, recording one out and allowing a run on two hits. He hit Braves 1B Freddie Freeman with a pitch and then summoned the Pirates' athletic trainer while flexing his left arm. Fantasy Tip: Observers believed that Rodriguez was pointing to his elbow. Obviously, this sounds as if it could be pretty serious, but it's impossible to guess further until the team updates his status. Speculation has already centered on a call-up for prospect Gerrit Cole, although it's unclear if that's in the cards. Cole would warrant a pickup in deep leagues, at least, if he were to receive the call. James McDonald (shoulder) is very close to returning from the DL, and Charlie Morton (elbow) is closing in on a return from Tommy John surgery, so Cole speculation, at least as a long-term solution, may just be wishful thinking.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 20:45:32 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (hamstring) was able to make his scheduled start Friday, April 19, and he faced the minimum while throwing seven scoreless innings and allowing just one hit in the win. He struck out five batters and did not walk one. "When you see a guy twirling like he did today, there's not any team that's going to put up much against him," manager Clint Hurdle said. "It wasn't just the strikes but the location of the strikes. It was like he was throwing darts."
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:33:09 -0700 Pittsburgh Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (hamstring) is scheduled to make his next start Friday, April 19. Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez was dealing with a minor hamstring issue, and he avoided a trip to the disabled list. Philip Irwin filled in for Rodriguez in the start that he missed. You may want to leave Rodriguez on your bench, though, with him facing the red-hot Atlanta Braves Friday.
