The New York Mets have informed 2B Omar Quintanilla and RP Scott Atchison that they will not be tendered a contract offer, which will make them free agents.

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada will be the primary shortstop for the remainder of the season after being called up from the minors, although he won't start Tuesday, Sept. 10. The team is likely to explore other options at shortstop this offseason, though, and Tejada will be arbitration-eligible for the first time with a salary less than $1 million in 2014. Tejada hit .288 with two home runs and 24 RBIs in 269 plate appearances for Triple-A Buffalo this year.
Fantasy Tip: The club was disappointed with Tejada's work ethic this year, so he'll have to prove himself in the final few weeks in order to stick around. He's an option in NL-only leagues only, and Omar Quintanilla loses any little value he had.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said SS Omar Quintanilla remains the team's shortstop, and SS Ruben Tejada is unlikely to rejoin the team until rosters expand in September. "I get questions every day about when the other guy is coming back -- 'When's Ruben coming back?'" Collins said. "I've yet to see why Omar Quintanilla should lose his job. All he does is make plays like that night after night. You look at his batting average (.224) and it's not what he'd like it to be. But he's on base 33 percent of the time and he's done a really good job. We wouldn't be playing like we're playing without him." Tejada is hitting .257 since being sent down and is 4-for-52 since July 26.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins doesn't foresee a platoon arrangement at shortstop between SS Omar Quintanilla and SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) when Tejada is ready to return. Collins said Tejada will have to earn playing time over Quintanilla. "We sent him out for a reason. He wasn't playing well," Collins said about Tejada. "He's got to play well. ... Right now it's too far down the road. But I'm not going to take Q out of the lineup at this particular time except to get him a blow."
Fantasy Tip: It appears as though Collins has some loyalty toward Quintanilla now, and it'll take solid play from Tejada to convince him otherwise. Still, with Quintanilla receiving regular playing time, he's only an NL-only commodity.

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) will start a minor league rehab assignment later this week in the Gulf Coast League. He'll also spend time with Triple-A Las Vegas before returning from the disabled list. However, manager Terry Collins isn't sure how playing time will be divided between Tejada and SS Omar Quintanilla.
Fantasy Tip: Tejada wasn't swinging the stick very well before he was injured, and New York even considered sending him to the minors at one point. He could regain the starting job back from Quintanilla, but he'll have to prove it with his play. When he returns, he'll only be an NL-only commodity initially.

New York Mets SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) is not ready to perform lateral movements when he fields groundballs in Florida. However, he's been hitting off a tee. It doesn't appear as if he's close to returning. SS Omar Quintanilla is hitting .250 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 64 at-bats in Tejada's absence.
Fantasy Tip: Quintanilla's NL-only value is bolstered by this news. As long as Tejada is out, he'll be the man at shortstop, and Jordany Valdespin can occasionally spell him.

Updating a previous item, New York Mets 2B Justin Turner (intercostal) is expected to land on the disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle on his left side, according to manager Terry Collins. Turner had an MRI exam Monday, June 17, and isn't traveling with the team. The team is expected to recall SP Zack Wheeler and activate RP Scott Atchison (elbow) from the disabled list Tuesday, June 18. Collins said INF Jordany Valdespin will serve as the backup to SS Omar Quintanilla at shortstop.
Fantasy Tip: Turner was serving as infield depth for the Mets. He didn't carry much value to begin with aside from NL-only leagues. It's safe to drop him if you were using him as depth in cavernous mixed leagues.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) won't automatically be given his job at shortstop back when he returns. INF Omar Quintanilla will have the chance to prove he deserves a starting job in the meantime. Quintanilla will be the regular shortstop with Tejada out, but 2B Justin Turner may get an occasional nod if the team faces a tough lefty. Tejada received a cortisone injection Thursday, May 30, and doesn't know how much time he'll miss. Tejada missed seven weeks last year with a right quad strain.
Fantasy Tip: For now, Quintanilla should only be considered in very deep mixed leagues or NL-only leagues. If he performs well and takes the job, he'll warrant additional attention as middle infield depth.

The New York Mets could use INF Omar Quintanilla and 2B Justin Turner in a platoon at shortstop with SS Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: Quintanilla was hitting .413 with a home run, 10 RBIs and 10 walks in May with Triple-A Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, a hitter-friendly environment. He'll only be an asset in deep NL leagues, especially if Turner cuts into his time.
