Angels | C.J. Wilson has fluid drained

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 21:14:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) had fluid drained from his left elbow following his most recent start Saturday, April 25. He threw his normal between-starts bullpen session Wednesday, April 29, and said his elbow felt "way better than it was a week ago." Wilson is scheduled to toe the slab Friday, May 1, against the San Francisco Giants, and he has been told he will be able to pitch every five days.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100; 8.2% of cap) has been a decent FantasyScore option, going 1-2 with a respectable 3.12 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 26 innings. Really, he has had just one poor start in four outings so consider him a decent mid-level value.

Angels | C.J. Wilson dealing with elbow stiffness

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:35:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson's (elbow) next start was pushed back because he is suffering from elbow stiffness, according to manager Mike Scioscia.

Fantasy Tip: With the injury speculation confirmed, it is a bleak turn for Wilson's ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) fantasy stock. Starting a pitcher with an arm injury is the last thing you want to do in daily contests. Avoid Wilson in all formats until he proves he is healthy and capable of pitching deep into a game with success. He is a low-end arm in the majority of matchups anyway, though.

Angels | C.J. Wilson pushed back to Saturday

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:13:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson will have his next start pushed back to Saturday, April 25, against the Texas Rangers. He was originally scheduled to start against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is likely nursing a minor nagging injury, which raises red flags. Although the matchup against Texas isn't daunting, Wilson has been prone to blowup starts dating back to 2013, and he might not be 100%. He is noting more than a flier for daily contests Saturday.

Angels | Nick Tropeano starting Thursday

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:00:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Nick Tropeano will start against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, April 23, which will push C.J. Wilson's next start back to Saturday, April 25, against the Texas Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) may be dealing with a minor injury, which makes him a risky FantasyScore start Saturday, especially with his blowup potential. Tropeano should be viewed as a desperation start in all formats Thursday.

Angels | Jered Weaver targeted for opener

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 16:00:47 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver is being targeted by the team to start opening day against the Seattle Mariners Monday, April 6. The rest of the rotation is expected to be SPs C.J. Wilson, Matt Shoemaker and Hector Santiago, according to manager Mike Scioscia.

Fantasy Tip: Weaver ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) has been the team's expected opening day starter all along, so this shouldn't come as a big surprise. The Mariners should be even better offensively in 2015 with notable offseason acquisitions, but Weaver should be an acceptable FantasyScore pitching play on opening day.

Angels | Big rebound expected for C.J. Wilson

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 19:04:41 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson had a disappointing season in 2014, going 13-10 with a 4.51 ERA. However, he has pitched well in the spring with a 2.31 ERA in three Cactus League appearances, and manager Mike Scioscia expects a bounce back season. "I think he's throwing the ball as well as I've seen him throw it, which brings you back to either the start of last year or a couple of years ago," Scioscia said Tuesday, March 31. "I think that a lot of the second-half issues - from the health to consistency to release point - have been resolved. I look for a big year from C.J."

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has been a middle round pick for most fantasy owners on draft day, so if he is able to have the bounce back year Scioscia is planning then the pitcher could be quite the steal. At $5,300 (or 10.6% of cap) FantasyScore owners will want to pick and choose their spots carefully with the lefty.

Angels | Halos could use four-man rotation

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 11:37:25 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are expected to begin the regular season with a four-man starting rotation and an eight-man bullpen, according to manager Mike Scioscia. SPs Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Matt Shoemaker and Hector Santiago are expected to start the first four games of the season. The Angels will not need a fifth starter until April 14, but injured SP Garrett Richards (knee) is unlikely to be available by then.

Fantasy Tip: This means that SPs Andrew Heaney and Nick Tropeano will likely begin the year in the minors but one of them could be recalled to make the start April 14. Neither pitcher has much value in universal leagues, although Heaney has the bigger upside and could be worthy of consideration in the later rounds of AL-only drafts.

Angels | C.J. Wilson struggles in start

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 19:32:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson allowed five runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, March 27.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson struggled last season, and he has given fantasy owners no reason he can return to form. He is worth scooping up late in drafts, but be prepared to cut him loose if he continues to struggle.

Angels | C.J. Wilson focusing on changeup

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 12:32:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson plans to rely heavily on his changeup again this season. The southpaws' changeup usage climbed to a career-high 12.5% in 2014, and opposing batters hit .279 against it. Wilson, 34, said utilizing the pitch more frequently is an attempt to preserve his arm and lessen the strain on it.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson's 2014 season was a nightmare. Over the previous four years he averaged 15 wins, a 3.37 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and 184 strikeouts over 210 innings pitched, though. And while there is bounce-back potential, Wilson is nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson returns to mound

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 15:27:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (illness) returned to the mound in a three-inning, 40-pitchouting Wednesday, March 18, and he looked sharp. Manager Mike Scioscia said Wilson will start on three days of rest Sunday, March 22, which will put him back on schedule to pitch in the first week of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has fallen quickly in his fantasy appeal the past several seasons after moving to the Angels. His ERA and WHIP ballooned last year, and his poor postseason performance is also likely fresh in owner's minds. Wilson is nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed leagues.
