Angels | C.J. Wilson elects to have surgery

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 15:05:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) will have season-ending cleanup surgery on his elbow. He is expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Fantasy Tip: You can safely drop Wilson in all single-year formats now. That means that promising youngster Andrew Heaney ($7,100, 14.2% of cap) should remain in the rotation for the rest of the season. He has been very useful to fantasy owners and has shown no signs of slowing down. Heaney should be owned in all leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson seeking second opinion

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 11:27:32 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) will seek a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache around Aug. 11, but Wilson is leaning toward having season-ending surgery to have eight bone spurs removed from his left elbow. The Angels have approached Wilson to see if he'd like to delay the surgery until the offseason to help the team out of the bullpen. "This is going to be driven by the medical staff," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Whatever decision the medical staff makes, with the doctors, with C.J., is really the direction that this will go. It has nothing to do with what our preference is. It's about, and always will be about, the health of the player." It's a long shot that Wilson will pitch again this year.

Fantasy Tip: It would make sense to hold onto Wilson ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) in single-universe leagues if you have the room. In mixed leagues, however, we wouldn't blame you for dropping him now, since the chances of him making any kind of fantasy impact down the stretch are remote.

Angels | C.J. Wilson out for season?

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 11:05:03 -0700

Updating a previous report, MRI results for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) show a left elbow impingement secondary to arthritis. He is expected to undergo surgery to clean out bone spurs from his elbow which have caused diminished range of motion and increased risk of shoulder injury. The procedure could end his season prematurely but Wilson expects to be able to pitch effectively in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson's ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) injury means that Matt Shoemaker ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) is likely to retain his spot in the Angels' starting rotation after Jered Weaver (hip) is activated from the disabled list. He went 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts this season, with his lowest WHIP (1.242) since 2011. He can be dropped in redraft leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson lands on disabled list

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 14:00:51 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) was placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his left elbow Friday, July 31. In a corresponding move, the Angels recalled SP Drew Rucinski from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Check back for an update on whether Rucinski will start. It seems unlikely because he has really struggled with Salt Lake and the Angels. Plus, Jered Weaver ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is returning from a hip injury soon, so he could rejoin the rotation in Wilson's spot. Stay tuned for further updates on the severity of Wilson's injury and how long he projects to be out, too.

Angels | C.J. Wilson strike outs nine

Thu, 18 Jun 2015 18:18:56 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson struck out a season-high nine and allowed one run on eight hits over eight innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, June 18.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) has allowed just one run over 15 innings in his last two starts, and he has struck out seven or more in five straight. For the price, he offers decent upside at FantasyScore, especially if his strikeout totals remain strong.

Angels | C.J. Wilson not good under sun

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 19:11:57 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson is scheduled to face the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, June 17 in the afternoon series finale. Wilson is 0-2 with an 8.15 ERA in three day games as opposed to a 4-3 record with a 2.41 ERA in 10 outings at night.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($5,200; or 10.4% of cap) is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA in six road outings, and he stinks in day games. That makes him a very risky play for FantasyScore owners, so it might be best to go another way.

Angels | C.J. Wilson has fluid drained

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 21:14:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (elbow) had fluid drained from his left elbow following his most recent start Saturday, April 25. He threw his normal between-starts bullpen session Wednesday, April 29, and said his elbow felt "way better than it was a week ago." Wilson is scheduled to toe the slab Friday, May 1, against the San Francisco Giants, and he has been told he will be able to pitch every five days.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100; 8.2% of cap) has been a decent FantasyScore option, going 1-2 with a respectable 3.12 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 26 innings. Really, he has had just one poor start in four outings so consider him a decent mid-level value.

Angels | C.J. Wilson dealing with elbow stiffness

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:35:58 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson's (elbow) next start was pushed back because he is suffering from elbow stiffness, according to manager Mike Scioscia.

Fantasy Tip: With the injury speculation confirmed, it is a bleak turn for Wilson's ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) fantasy stock. Starting a pitcher with an arm injury is the last thing you want to do in daily contests. Avoid Wilson in all formats until he proves he is healthy and capable of pitching deep into a game with success. He is a low-end arm in the majority of matchups anyway, though.

Angels | C.J. Wilson pushed back to Saturday

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:13:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson will have his next start pushed back to Saturday, April 25, against the Texas Rangers. He was originally scheduled to start against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is likely nursing a minor nagging injury, which raises red flags. Although the matchup against Texas isn't daunting, Wilson has been prone to blowup starts dating back to 2013, and he might not be 100%. He is noting more than a flier for daily contests Saturday.

Angels | Nick Tropeano starting Thursday

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 16:00:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Nick Tropeano will start against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, April 23, which will push C.J. Wilson's next start back to Saturday, April 25, against the Texas Rangers.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) may be dealing with a minor injury, which makes him a risky FantasyScore start Saturday, especially with his blowup potential. Tropeano should be viewed as a desperation start in all formats Thursday.
