Angels | C.J. Wilson focusing on changeup

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 12:32:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson plans to rely heavily on his changeup again this season. The southpaws' changeup usage climbed to a career-high 12.5% in 2014, and opposing batters hit .279 against it. Wilson, 34, said utilizing the pitch more frequently is an attempt to preserve his arm and lessen the strain on it.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson's 2014 season was a nightmare. Over the previous four years he averaged 15 wins, a 3.37 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and 184 strikeouts over 210 innings pitched, though. And while there is bounce-back potential, Wilson is nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson returns to mound

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 15:27:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (illness) returned to the mound in a three-inning, 40-pitchouting Wednesday, March 18, and he looked sharp. Manager Mike Scioscia said Wilson will start on three days of rest Sunday, March 22, which will put him back on schedule to pitch in the first week of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson has fallen quickly in his fantasy appeal the past several seasons after moving to the Angels. His ERA and WHIP ballooned last year, and his poor postseason performance is also likely fresh in owner's minds. Wilson is nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson to miss another start

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 10:22:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (illness) will miss his spring start due to an illness Tuesday, March 17. It is nothing related to the left knee injury that kept him from his last start.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson isn't in danger of missing the start of the regular season, but he's behind in camp at this point, which isn't encouraging for a pitcher that was lit up in the playoffs last year and posted a 4.51 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 2014. Wilson isn't very attractive to fantasy owners other than a late-round flier in mixed leagues.

Angels | C.J. Wilson on track for next turn

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 11:11:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (knee) had an MRI exam on his left knee that checked out fine, and he's scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, March 14, and make his next spring start Tuesday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson's numbers in the last few seasons are not particularly appetizing. Last year, he hurt his owners with a 4.51 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 31 starts (175 2/3 innings). He's still worth a late-round look in deep mixed leagues, but he may be best utilized as a pitching stream in the right matchups, especially in daily leagues like FantasyScore.

Angels | C.J. Wilson tweaks knee

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:06:01 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP C.J. Wilson (knee) tweaked his left knee during fielding drills Wednesday, March 11, and he won't make his scheduled spring start Thursday, March 12, as a result. Manager Mike Scioscia doesn't think that Wilson will be out long, and he has plenty of time to be ready for the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Wilson put up a disappointing ERA of 4.51 in 2014, to go along with an ugly 1.45 WHIP and 151 strikeouts in 175 2/3 innings. Wilson often struggles with command and can be very inconsistent at times, making him a late-round option in deep mixed leagues, at best.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker pushed back

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 10:45:43 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker was forced to make an emergency relief appearance in the team's 19-inning game against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, Aug. 9, so he'll have his next start pushed back to Saturday, Aug. 16, after throwing 102 pitches in his last start and 41 in the game Saturday. Shoemaker earned the win against Boston in the marathon game. SP C.J. Wilson will make the start Tuesday, Aug. 12, in place of Shoemaker.
