Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports St. Louis Rams OT Grant Williams (back) was out with a back injury at practice Friday, August 5. The Rams sent Williams to get an MRI and will wait to see how it pans out. "He strained it again two days ago," head coach Mike Martz said. "We don't know what it is for sure. It's the same thing he had two years ago. We are just going to see what happens."

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz is quite confident that OL Blaine Saipaia will perform well as the starting right tackle in place of injured OT Grant Williams (shoulder) for Week 14 versus the Carolina Panthers. "I have great confidence in him," Martz said. "He's a guy that I looked at all year, throughout the season, and felt like he was going to be one of our feature starters here eventually. He has the athleticism to line up on the edge and block a guy like (DE Julius) Peppers, with his feet and his strength and all of those things."

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams OLT Grant Williams (ankle) has a sprained ankle that likely needs a week to properly heal, according to Rams head coach Mike Martz. However, Williams will probably play through the injury. "We're so thin at this point," Martz said. "I told him, do what you can do. If he can't (play), this is his decision and I respect him. ... There's great character in that man."

Williams would like to be back on the field for the team's next preseason game. "It could not bother me tomorrow or it could bother me for a couple of weeks," Williams said. "I want to play as soon as I feel like I can get over and do things."

The Post-Dispatch reports the St. Louis Rams are working on a contract extension that would lower OT Kyle Turley's salary cap number in 2003. "He's our starting right tackle," Rams coach Mike Martz said. "Grant Williams will be our third tackle right now. And I'm not sure what we're going to do with John (St. Clair). John may go back inside." Martz says he's planning on having OT Orlando Pace line up at left tackle next season. "Any time you can add attitude like Kyle's at any position, you should do it," Martz said. "I love the way he plays. I remember him at San Diego State. We loved him coming out."

Updating earlier stories, ESPN.com reports St. Louis Rams OT Orlando Pace (calf) is now expected to miss at least two weeks of action due to his torn calf muscle. "To have something sidetrack you is a little frustrating,'' Pace said. "I'll just fight through it and hopefully I'll be back in a couple of weeks.'' Coach Mike Martz said there was no way Pace could play against the Cowboys on Sunday, or next week at San Francisco. OT Grant Williams is expected to take his place.
