Reds | Brandon Phillips injury update

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 13:07:52 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (thumb) has a ligament tear in his left thumb, and he will have surgery Friday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: To put the recovery timetable in perspective, Bryce Harper missed 57 games and almost two months with a torn ligament. Phillips' season could be over. Skip Schumaker and Ramon Santiago will see additional playing time. Schumaker is an option in NL-only leagues.

Reds | Joey Votto to DL

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 08:00:28 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (quadriceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps. C/1B Brayan Pena was activated from the paternity list.

Fantasy Tip: Todd Frazier is playing first base Tuesday, July 8, with Ramon Santiago at the hot corner. Jay Bruce started at first base Monday, July 7, with Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker in the corner outfield spots. Expect a rotation with Chris Heisey also involved in the short term if they decide to go that route, but the Santiago elevation to the lineup is more likely. All of these subs are desperation NL-only assets.

Reds | Three-headed monster in LF

Tue, 03 Jun 2014 16:44:06 -0700

Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said he will continue to use a platoon of OFs Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker and Chris Heisey in left field for a while. Schumaker is starting in left Tuesday, June 3, but Price said it's his preference for Ludwick to do something to earn the starting job back.

Fantasy Tip: Until we see Ludwick get more time in left field, he shouldn't be an option for standard mixed league rosters. Schumaker and Heisey are only worth owning in NL-only leagues, too.

Reds | Joey Votto likely to go on DL

Fri, 16 May 2014 09:15:43 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (knee) underwent an MRI exam on his left knee Friday, May 16, and he's likely to go on the disabled list, according to sources. It is the same knee that he had surgery on back in 2012.

Fantasy Tip: This could be a serious injury for Votto that could keep him out well beyond the 15-day DL stint. Plan for the worst. In Votto's absence, perhaps the Reds will slide Todd Frazier over to first base and insert Ramon Santiago in at the hot corner. Skip Schumaker is another option to fill in wherever needed at the corner infield spots. Santiago and Schumaker are only mildly attractive options in NL-only leagues with increased playing time.

Reds | Jay Bruce out 3-4 weeks

Sun, 04 May 2014 20:14:44 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce (knee) will have surgery this week to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee. He's likely to miss three to four weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Chris Heisey replaces him in the lineup and is an add in deep mixed formats. Maybe Skip Schumaker or Roger Bernadina will contribute, as well, but they're hardly playable even in NL-only games.
