Tue, 12 Feb 2013 13:56:46 -0800 Houston Astros RP Jose Veras is the leading candidate to open the season as the team's closer this season. He has only five saves and a 4.01 ERA in 327 career major league appearances. "If you're going to take a chance on someone to be a first-time closer, that's the type of guy you want," manager Bo Porter said. "We do have other pitchers that will get an opportunity to pitch late in the game, whether it's (Rhiner) Cruz, who had a really good winter league, or (Hector) Ambriz. There are others who will get a look, but Veras has the experience right now and is the front-runner."

Fri, 21 Dec 2012 23:53:15 -0800 Updating previous items, the contract signed by Houston Astros RP Jose Veras calls for possible extra money should he close games this season. The team has said Veras will get a shot at the closing job. Veras would stand to earn not just his $1.85 million base salary in '13, but also as much as $500,000 in incentives based on games finished. His deal also includes a $3.25 million club option or $150,000 buyout for 2014 — and the size of the option can increase to between $4 million and $5.5 million based on games finished, with Veras again eligible to receive $500,000 in incentives.

Wed, 31 Oct 2012 23:58:26 -0700 Updating a previous item, the Milwaukee Brewers notified SP Jose Veras that they intend to outright him from the 40-man roster, a move that would end his yearlong tenure with a team that is in the process of rebuilding its bullpen. Agent Bryce Dixon said that Veras has elected for free agency, but a Brewers official called that announcement premature, because a player must first clear waivers. That process was ongoing as of Wednesday, Oct. 31, leaving open several possibilities, including Veras being claimed by another club before he has a chance to reach the open market.
Sat, 27 Oct 2012 10:19:43 -0700 Milwaukee Brewers RPs Kameron Loe, RP Manny Parra and Jose Veras are not expected to be on the team next season because their salaries will exceed their productivity levels. All three will be arbitration eligible this offseason.
