Phillies | Chase Utley calls mid-June return realistic

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 15:24:54 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (oblique) swung a bat on Sunday, June 9, for the first time in nearly three weeks. He progressed to soft toss in the indoor cage with assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner on Wednesday, June 12, at Target Field. He doesn't have a target date for a return or a rehab assignment, but he's encouraged by the fact that he hasn't had any soreness since he started swinging. He hopes to participate in live batting practice this weekend in Denver. Utley said of an estimated mid-June return, "I think it's still realistic."

Fantasy Tip: Utley should check the calendar. Assuming that he has no setbacks, perhaps he'll begin a rehab assignment beginning next week, putting him on track to be back by the following weekend. Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen will continue to split time in his place.

Phillies | Michael Young to bereavement list

Wed, 29 May 2013 11:53:18 -0700

The Philadelphia Phillies placed 3B Michael Young on the bereavement list Wednesday, May 29, and recalled INF Cesar Hernandez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Young could miss as few as three games. Freddy Galvis will likely shift over to third base in the meantime, and any combination of Hernandez, Kevin Frandsen and Michael Martinez could play second base. Only Galvis should be owned in very deep leagues with Chase Utley (oblique) on the DL.

Phillies | Delmon Young to play Tuesday

Mon, 01 Apr 2013 15:32:20 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young (ankle) will play three innings in right field in an extended spring game Tuesday, April 2, his first action in the outfield since his ankle surgery in the offseason. INF Kevin Frandsen (wrist) took batting practice Monday, April 1, but his availability is still in question.

Fantasy Tip: This is a big step for Young. He'll need to build up his innings in extended spring training and prove that he can play in back-to-back games in the outfield probably before the Phillies are confident he is fully healthy.

Phillies | Kevin Frandsen hot

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 14:25:13 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies INF Kevin Frandsen homered Friday, March 8, and is batting .385 (10-for-26) with six extra-base hits in spring training. Frandsen is battling with SS Yuniesky Betancourt and 2B Freddy Galvis for a roster spot. Manager Charlie Manuel has an affinity for Galvis, and the team can't send him to the minors without passing him through waivers.

Phillies | Ryan Howard not resting

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 12:53:51 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is in the spring lineup for the sixth straight day Thursday, Feb. 28, and he finished 2-for-3 with an opposite-field home run off Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel. OFs Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr. and INF Kevin Frandsen have also appeared in every spring game so far. Howard wants to get his "game legs" under him, and he's 4-for-6 against left-handers with two doubles.
