ESPN.com reports New England Patriots LB Larry Izzo is scheduled to testify for the prosecution in the perjury trial against Barry Bonds, which is expected to begin March 2. Izzo will reportedly testify that he received performance-enhancing drugs from Greg Anderson, Bonds' personal trainer, in 2003 along with instructions and a schedule of how to use them. "Mr. Izzo will testify that he was a professional football player and that he first contacted Greg Anderson by phone in approximately January 2003," the court filing by the prosecution says, according to The Boston Globe. "Mr. Izzo will also testify that he first met Anderson in person in approximately May 2003 at BALCO and submitted a urine sample at BALCO at Anderson's request. Mr. Izzo will also testify that (he) submitted additional urine samples to Anderson at later times as well. … Mr. Izzo will also testify about receiving performance-enhancing substances from Anderson, about instructions from Anderson about how to administer the substances, about the schedule Anderson gave to him for administering the substances, and about what Mr. Anderson told him about the efficacy of those substances."

John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports no unit of the New England Patriots was hit harder by free agency than the special teams unit. The loss of PK Adam Vinatieri to the Indianapolis Colts received the most press, but the Patriots also lost coverage standout LB Matt Chatham along with punt returner WR Tim Dwight to the New York Jets and gunner WR Andre' Davis signed with the Buffalo Bills. Special teams captain LB Larry Izzo hopes the new members of the unit can fill in for the losses and add to what the unit could not accomplish last year, "We'd like to be better than we were last year and there's definitely room for improvement." Izzo went on to say the easiest way to make a roster is through special teams, and new members will find that out quick because of the emphasis the Patriots place on the unit.

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots LB Monty Beisel said he has spoken with defensive coordinator Dean Pees and was given the indication he will be utilized differently during the 2006 season, possibly to take better advantage of his speed. Beisel has also spent time with new linebackers coach Matt Patricia. Beisel said, "``I think it's going to be really good [with Matt]. That's one thing they talk about around here, when people come and people go, the transition is always smooth. I think it's been seamless so far." Beisel projects to compete with LBs Ryan Claridge, Eric Alexander, Barry Gardner, Larry Izzo and Don Davis for playing time at inside linebacker. If LB Mike Vrabel moves back to outside linebacker, Beisel is a top candidate to start at inside linebacker.

He will be in competition for a key role in the defense this season. "Just being around the guys, Tedy Bruschi, Larry Izzo, Don Davis, I can see from a distance how they do things," Claridge said. "I'm an idiot if I don't follow those guys and run into their back. What they do works, and they know everything. I can take information from them every day."

John Tomase, of the Boston Herald, reports television cameras caught New England Patriots LB Willie McGinest yelling at LB Larry Izzo during the team's playoff loss Saturday, Jan. 14. McGinest was incensed after Denver Broncos RB Mike Anderson's second one-yard touchdown run gave the Broncos a 17-6 lead. He was upset at Izzo who had contain on the play, but was beaten outside by Anderson. Fellow LB Mike Vrabel stepped in to separate the two.
