Nationals | Ian Desmond off to fast start

Mon, 16 Apr 2012 16:43:09 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond, who came into the game Monday, April 16, 17-for-48 (.354) with a .380 on-base percentage, said he's playing better because he's not worried about his status on the team anymore. "It's nice to know that if I go 0-for-5, I'm not going to come in the next day and need a break," Desmond said. "Davey understands that you don't have to come out and have success every single day. It's nice to have the support of the manager."

Nationals | Ian Desmond to lead off

Tue, 20 Mar 2012 15:51:41 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond will be the team's leadoff hitter to start the season, with 2B Danny Espinosa hitting behind him at No. 2. Desmond hit .281 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 50 games at the leadoff spot last year. However, Espinosa hit just .189 in 160 plate appearances in the second spot.

Desmond and Espinosa have both worked to tweak their swings in spring training this year. Espinosa has tried to cut out a loop in his swing when he hits from the left side. Manager Davey Johnson thinks Espinosa is getting his timing back from the left side. "His stroke from the right side has really been good from the time I've been here," Johnson said. "His left side was a little longer, and he's gotten shorter, it's more direct, and he's more powerful with that swing."

Nationals | Manager not happy with Ian Desmond's stance

Sun, 11 Mar 2012 18:24:03 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Sunday, March 11, that he isn't happy with the new batting stance of SS Ian Desmond. The player worked with his former high school hitting coach in the offseason to make adjustments to his hitting mechanics. Desmond and Johnson had a conversation about the stance Saturday, March 10. "He's impressionable," Johnson said. "They're all impressionable because they want to get better. Anybody who has a history with him is going to have their own ideas of what he needs to do to get better. I know him pretty good and I think I'm a little more experienced in knowing what he looks like when he's going good and what he needs to be working on, and how he needs to be thinking."
