Rays | Ian Desmond a long shot for Tampa

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 15:59:13 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) is now considered a "long shot" to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays, as the Rays do not want to give up their No. 13 overall pick in order to land him.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond has remained on the market this long because of the first-round compensation issue. The Chicago White Sox look like the favorites to sign him now. The power/speed combination remains, but he struggles to make contact, which limits his ceiling. A move to Chicago would be intriguing and make him a sleeper candidate in the later rounds.

White Sox | Chicago considering Ian Desmond

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 12:37:15 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) is on the radar of several teams, including the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond batted .233 with 19 home runs and 62 RBI for Washington last season. Chicago has only Tyler Saladino and Andy Parrino at shortstop right now, so Desmond would have to be considered a favorite to start. As a power hitter at a traditionally weak-hitting position playing half of his games at U.S. Cellular Field, the 30-year-old could see a nice boost in value and be a low-end fantasy starter.

MLB | Ian Desmond to move to 3B?

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:05:07 -0800

One National League scout suggested that it'd be a good move for free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) to make the move to third base. "I think he would be excellent there," said the scout. "He's a shortstop who probably doesn't have the great range, but he'd be very good at third. He's a great kid in the clubhouse who works hard. At some point, there has got to be a team, maybe one who has a pick at the end of the first round, who'd give that up for a guy like this."

Fantasy Tip: Desmond remains on the open market, so his fantasy value will depend on where he lands. A disappointing .233 average in 2015 has many down on him, but the free swinger remains a 20-homer candidate, and he can also run a bit. There is buying potential in the middle rounds.

Rays | Obstacles preventing Ian Desmond to Rays

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 14:42:13 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) has a number of connections to the Tampa Bay Rays, but his expected contract demands, and the Rays having to forfeit their No. 13 overall pick in the upcoming 2016 Amateur Draft if they sign Desmond are obstacles preventing a deal.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond's batting average and OPS have dropped in each of the past four seasons, and he didn't reach the 20-stolen base mark in 2015. Entering his age-30 season, his offensive prime could be behind him, and you'll want to be wary of targeting him too early in drafts leading into the season.

Padres | San Diego close to signing SS

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 09:44:15 -0800

The San Diego Padres are close to signing a shortstop not free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals), according to sources. Free-agent SS Alexei Ramirez (White Sox) appears to be their choice, barring a surprise.

Fantasy Tip: The fantasy appeal of Ramirez is very low right now, especially after he posted a .249 average with 10 home runs and 17 stolen bases in his final season with the Chicago White Sox. Moving to pitcher-friendly Petco Park will further reduce his appeal, although he can run a bit. He's a low-end middle infield option in deep mixed formats.

MLB | Ian Desmond to play other positions?

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 10:08:33 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) is receiving interest at second base, third base and the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond's batting average struggled in 2015 (.233), but he still managed to hit 19 home runs and drive in 62 runs in 156 games. His long swing often gets him into trouble, but he remains a 20-homer commodity at a weak position, and he can also steal double-digit bases. He should remain a popular shortstop pick in fantasy leagues regardless of where he lands.

Nationals | Ian Desmond rejects qualifying offer

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 13:04:24 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) rejected the Washington Nationals' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond's name value has longer legs than his fantasy returns the past couple of seasons. His batting average and OPS have regressed in each of the past four seasons, and he didn't reach the 20-stolen base mark last year. Entering his age-30 season, be care not to target Desmond too aggressively next spring, as his offensive prime is likely behind him.

Padres | San Diego interested in Ian Desmond

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 13:17:54 -0800

Free-agent SS Ian Desmond (Nationals) is of interest to the San Diego Padres, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Desmond has experienced a regression in batting average and OPS in four consecutive season, and he enters his age-30 campaign in 2016. He also failed to hit the 20-stolen base mark for the first time since 2010 last year. With his offensive prime likely in the rear-view mirror, be careful not to over value Desmond next spring.

Nationals | Qualifying offers extended to two Nats

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 14:24:16 -0800

Washington Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann and SS Ian Desmond each received a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the team.

Fantasy Tip: Zimmermann will enter his age-30 season following a five-year stretch were he posted a 3.14 ERA, a 3.30 FIP, a 1.14 WHIP and a 7.3 K/9 over 971 2/3 innings. He projects as a low-end No. 2 starter for your rotation in mixed leagues entering the 2016 campaign. Desmond, on the other hand, enters 2016 following an incredibly disappointing season. However, a closer look highlights a four-year decline in batting average and OPS for Desmond and a four-year increase in his strikeout total. Be careful not to reach too early on Desmond in seasonal leagues next spring.

Nationals | Ian Desmond takes a seat

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 15:40:50 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond is out of the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 3, with SS Trea Turner leading off.

Fantasy Tip: The high-end prospect Turner ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) hasn't done a lot in his young career and isn't worth a start against Matt Harvey on FantasyScore.
