Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond will be the team's starting shortstop this season, according to general manager Mike Rizzo. Rizzo said any trade offer would "have to be pretty elaborate not to have Ian Desmond on this team."

Washington Nationals SS Yunel Escobar could play shortstop this season if the team trades SS Ian Desmond or fails to sign him to a new contract. Desmond can become a free agent after this year. Escobar hit .258 with seven home runs and 39 RBI for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014.

Mets | NY Mets in active trade talks with Dillon Gee

The New York Mets are actively shopping SP Dillon Gee, per team sources. Gee's name came up in a trade with the Washington Nationals that would have sent Nationals SS Ian Desmond to the Mets, and the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants and Minnesota Twins are also interested.

Nationals | Ian Desmond could miss game due to birth of son

Washington Nationals SS Ian Desmond could wind up missing a game during the NLDS if his wife delivers the couple's third son earlier than expected, according to manager Matt Williams. Desmond said his wife and child are both healthy but he will leave the team when the moment nears. Doctors are unable to induce childbirth until Saturday, Oct. 11, which would coincide with Game 1 of the NLCS.
