Cubs | Welington Castillo to DL

Tue, 03 Jun 2014 13:19:05 -0700

The Chicago Cubs placed C Welington Castillo (rib cage) on the 15-day disabled list with a left rib cage injury Tuesday, June 3, and recalled C Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Some combination of Whiteside and John Baker will replace Welington behind the plate. Neither are very intriguing and are only worth considering in the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Padres | John Baker heading down

Tue, 28 May 2013 12:31:31 -0700

The San Diego Padres will send C John Baker to Triple-A Tucson to make room on the roster for C Yasmani Grandal Tuesday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: It's justifiable to be skeptical that Grandal will put up similar numbers now that we know he was using PEDs. However, his track record in the minors speaks to his ability, and he should be given a shot in mixed leagues if your incumbent backstop has underwhelmed.

Padres | Expected to send down a catcher

Mon, 27 May 2013 15:19:23 -0700

The San Diego Padres are expected to option C Nick Hundley or C John Baker to Triple-A Tucson when C Yasmani Grandal comes off the restricted list because the team likely will not keep three catchers.

Padres | Yasmani Grandal to begin playing in games

Wed, 15 May 2013 14:49:11 -0700

San Diego Padres C Yasmani Grandal will leave extended spring training and report to Triple-A Tucson Saturday, May 18, and he's eligible to come off the restricted list May 28 after being suspended for the first 50 games of the season. "He feels good, everything is solid, offensively and defensively," general manager Josh Byrnes said recently. "We will get him ready to play in those games and evaluate where he is and where our roster is." C John Baker is hitting only .115 and will likely be optioned to the minors to make room for Grandal.

Fantasy Tip: Grandal looked good in his major league audition last year, but the PED suspension makes us question how much of his production was actually real. It's unclear how much time he'll split with Nick Hundley, too. It's time to snatch him up in NL-only leagues if he's out there, but you can probably wait on him in mixed formats.
