New York Giants DL Justin Tuck said he has been impressed with the intensity of new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell this offseason, according to Matt Mosley, of ESPN.com. At the same time, Tuck took a shot at former defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. "You can tell he loves what he's doing," Tuck said of Fewell. "He has that fire about him, like he really loves defense. I think that is contagious. I've seen him lead a safety or corner into the end zone after a pick in practice. ... Bill would high-five us, but it sometimes didn't feel like he wanted to be there." Tuck also criticized Sheridan's play-calling last season. "Bill got stagnant in his play calling," Tuck said. "We didn't do a lot of adjustments last year. ... We kinda played individual ball a lot, me included. It made it easy for teams to single us out and block us."

"You can't blame the defensive coordinator," he said. "Obviously he made some bad calls, but if he had the players in place I think you can make up for that. Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin remains behind defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, even though the team's defense has struggled. However, Coughlin added the unit must be better. "I let him know my support for him and I also let him know it has to be better," Coughlin said. "We've got to do a better job. We're here for one reason. The inconsistency part of it is disturbing, let's face it. Six big-play passes and three big-play runs. You're not going to beat anybody like that." The Giants have given up 40 points or more three times this season and 30 points or more in two other games. Overall, the Giants are giving up 25.8 points per game, which ranks 28th in the league.

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he expects the defensive coaching staff to remain despite the hiring of new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. "I think we have an outstanding group of coaches," Coughlin said. "Steve is familiar with a number of them and I think that one thing that was a huge plus is I have a great sense that he will work very well with our current coaches and that the transition for him will be smooth." That staff includes Mike Waufle (defensive line), Bill Sheridan (linebackers), Peter Giunta (secondary/corners) and David Merritt (secondary/safeties).
