Sun, 21 Jan 2007 07:09:55 -0800 Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Southern California assistant coach and quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian said in an interview Saturday, Jan. 20, the Oakland Raiders were shocked the 32-year-old turned down the team's offer to become their next head coach. "They were a bit shocked because we had come so far," Sarkisian said in an interview with Sirius NFL Radio. "You have to get to a point to see, is this really what I want?" Sarkisian added. "Is this what I want right now in my career, at this stage, with this organization? Is this where I want to be? You have to get to that point to really know that this is what you want. It was a very difficult decision."

The deal averaged $2 million per season, but Sarkisian turned down the team. He felt he was not ready to become an NFL head coach, but insiders believe Sarkisian was scared off more by control issues than financial issues.

"I was presented with a tremendous opportunity and experience of interviewing with [owner] Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders for their head coach position. I thank them for their interest in me. While the job was never offered to me, at this time in my career I've told them I want to stay at USC. I strongly believe that the Raiders job is a great opportunity for whomever their next head coach is going to be. My goal is to be a head football coach in college and USC is the best place for me to attain that goal. I'm extremely fortunate to work at such a great university for a head coach in Pete Carroll who allows me to strive and achieve at the highest level," Sarkisian said.

"Anytime you get an opportunity to interview with a man like Al Davis, it's a great opportunity and one I'll cherish." "I am anticipating further conversations," Sarkisian added.
