Rockies | Using curveball machine

Fri, 15 Apr 2011 09:28:43 -0700

The Colorado Rockies hitters recently starting using a curveball machine during batting practice, according to The Denver Post's Troy E. Renck. "It helps lock you into a good swing," OF Ryan Spilborghs said. Hitting coach Carney Lansford is preaching that the team's hitters use the entire field, rather than focusing on constantly pulling pitches. "What the machine forces you to do is let the ball travel and stay through the ball," Lansford said. "I believe that creates good mechanics and more opposite-field hits."

Rockies | Carney Lansford wants hitters to use whole field

Tue, 25 Jan 2011 11:39:09 -0800

Colorado Rockies hitting coach Carney Lansford said he prefers his hitters to use the whole field, according to The Denver Post's Dave Krieger. "But my approach is totally different. Don was a pull-type hitter. I like my hitters to use the entire field. In my opinion, that makes them much tougher outs. Nobody likes home runs more than me, but trying to force a home run, trying to swing for a home run every at-bat, doesn't work. What it does is make you very easy to pitch to," Lansford said.

MLB | Steinbach, Lansford Say McGwire was Clean

Mon, 07 Feb 2005 14:23:09 -0800

The San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea reports former Oakland Athletics C Terry Steinbach and former Athletics 3B Carney Lansford, teammates of former Athletics 1B Mark McGwire, said McGwire never took steroids. "I came through the system with Mark; we were roommates in '87," said Steinbach, recalling their rookie year. "Mark wasn't one of those guys who all of a sudden one offseason got so big you couldn't recognize him, like they say about steroid users. Mark loved to lift weights. ... He was in the gym regularly." "Jose (Canseco)? No, at least not in the gym at the Coliseum or the gyms set up for us on the road. He was phenomenal in '88. Up to that point, he showed up on time and did his drills. All of a sudden, he didn't do the extra work in the outfield, and it showed. It frustrated us as teammates. It was frustrating that 24 guys marched to the same beat and Jose didn't."
