However, Mangini would not be a candidate to become an interim head coach if head coach Tony Sparano were fired during the season and Mangini would not be a candidate if the team made a head coaching change during the offseason.

However, the two sides have not discussed a contract thus far. It appears the Titans will take their time to make a decision. Head coach Jeff Fisher, according to sources, is expected to talk to a number of candidates during the coming week. Jim Mora Jr., Clancy Pendergast (University of California), and Gregg Williams (currently with the New Orleans Saints) could be options, or the team could look to promote assistant head coach Dave McGinnis to defensive coordinator. There is also a situation that could see Fisher handling the defensive play calling himself.

"We're not far (away)," WR Joshua Cribbs said. "We are playing for an offensive-minded coach. Holmgren is here, his essence is here, he's making changes. Coach Mangini has done a lot in the defensive scheme. I think (Holmgren) can allow himself to keep Mangini and still be effective. That's two great football minds there." LB David Bowens added the players have Mangini's back. "We always have his back,'' Bowens said. "It's not up to us who stays and who goes. It's out of our pay grade. We love Eric to death. Unfortunately, sometimes the coach gets all the blame."

"Yeah, he has all the intangibles," CB Sheldon Brown said. "He learned from one of the best (Bill Belichick). Obviously he knows the plan. It's not his fault when we give up touchdown passes, throw interceptions and fumble." FB Lawrence Vickers said the players are not only playing for each other, but for Mangini. "We want to keep fighting for our coach," Vickers said. "That's the type of coach that he is, and that's how we've kept playing. Hey, he coached us to finish, and that's what we're trying to do. I want to walk out of here with my head held high and I know the other guys do, too."
