Nationals | Chris Young could be sixth starter

Thu, 04 Apr 2013 12:32:49 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said SP Chris Young could become the team's sixth starter, which would keep SP Zach Duke in the bullpen. Young has an out clause in his minor league deal, and he's expected to throw a few bullpen sessions before heading to Triple-A Syracuse.

Fantasy Tip: Keep Young on your radar in deep NL-only leagues if the Nationals suffer an injury in their rotation.

Nationals | Impressed with Fernando Abad

Thu, 28 Feb 2013 15:24:25 -0800

The Washington Nationals have been impressed with RP Fernando Abad so far in camp. "I was really impressed with the way he threw the other day," manager Davey Johnson said. "The way he attacked the hitters (Wednesday), he threw a couple good curveballs. That was great. (Pitching coach Steve McCatty) wanted him to throw another inning. I said, 'No. I want to see that again the day after tomorrow.'" The Nats have only one other left-hander penciled into their bullpen (RP Zach Duke). Abad said his poor 2012 season was attributed to arm fatigue, and he built his endurance by running long distances in the offseason. Also, his arm slot was too far from his body a year ago, which led to him flying open when he threw. He worked this winter to stay closed and hold his arms higher, and the results so far this spring are encouraging - no hits, two strikeouts and two walks.

Nationals | Starter for Sunday undetermined

Wed, 19 Sep 2012 12:36:55 -0700

The Washington Nationals have yet to name a starter for their game against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, Sept. 23, but manager Davey Johnson said it'll likely be between SPs Craig Stammen and Chien-Ming Wang. SP Zach Duke is not an option because Johnson wants to roll with a right-handed pitcher against the Brewers. SPs Yunesky Maya and Ryan Perry are not options because the team is ruling out calling up an arm from the minors.
