Robert turned out to be a good special teams player last year, and if you're a backup linebacker here, you have to be a good special teams player. We expect him to rise this year at middle linebacker. Right now, I don't see him as where we want him."

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins LB Robert McCune is not having a strong training camp, according to linebackers coach Dale Lindsey. Lindsey said he wants to see more from McCune, who is fighting to win a backup spot at inside linebacker. "He's not where we want him. Robert turned out to be a good special teams players last year, and if you're a backup linebacker here we expect you to be good in that area. But we expect him to rise this year when he's playing middle linebacker. And right now, I don't see him where we want him, and I'm not taking the blame for that," added Lindsey.

Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins LB Robert McCune is putting in extra work in the Redskins offseason workout program. McCune, a fifth-round pick in the 2005 draft, is working with strength and conditioning coach John Hastings on a complete muscle workout, "Linebackers have to work everything. You have to be real athletic to be a linebacker in the NFL." In addition to physical training, McCune is putting in extra work in the classroom with linebackers coach Dale Lindsay. McCune knows it will take hard work for him to keep his job, after the Redskins drafted two linebackers and brought in several to minicamp. McCune primarily played special teams last year, but says he is learning both the middle linebacker and weak-side linebacker positions in the Redskins scheme.

"The fact that he's more mature—I like that," defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said. "We want to coach as many mature men as we can. I'm anxious to see him play in live conditions. He's got a good frame and he has shown toughness." Head coach Joe Gibbs has been very impressed with McCune's physical fitness. "He's got muscles bulging everywhere," Gibbs said. "Most football players are really well built, but he's on a different level." McCune is expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker job during training camp. He will also work on special teams.
