Smith worked as part of the NFL's minority coaching program in training camp and Belichick decided to keep him around to help work with the team's defensive backs.

However, Smith signed a one-day deal only just so he could retire with the Patriots. Smith played for four franchises but wanted to retire as a Patriot, according to his agent, Jim Solano.

His old salary for 2002 was $750,000 and the new one is $1.114 million, prorated down to $1.05 million. The raise jumps his cap value by $300,000, to $1.213 million. New England also shuffled some monies in future seasons, leaving Smith with roster bonuses of $450,000 for 2003 and $750,000 in 2004.

Paul Kenyon reports for the Providence Journal New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has employed a rotation system at linebacker and in the secondary which seems to be keeping his players fresher. LB Tedy Bruschi has seen his workload cut which has been a shock to his system. Bruschi is now part of a linebacker rotation with Bryan Cox and Ted Johnson, a rotation that allows each player to get some rest. The added depth could be especially useful this week. Sunday's game in Miami, where the temperatures are expected to be in the mid or high 80s. Ty Law, Otis Smith and Terrell Buckley have been sharing time at the corners all season. Matt Stevens and Tebucky Jones have been sharing time at free safety as well.
