Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has hired former Patriots DB Otis Smith for the entire 2006 season. Smith worked as part of the NFL's minority coaching program in training camp and Belichick decided to keep him around to help work with the team's defensive backs.

Updating a previous story, Tom E. Curran, reports for the Providence Journal, CB Otis Smith did sign with the New England Patriots Monday May 16. However, Smith signed a one-day deal only just so he could retire with the Patriots. Smith played for four franchises but wanted to retire as a Patriot, according to his agent, Jim Solano.

Patriots.com reports New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes there is a possibility CB Otis Smith could be utilized as the team's No. 3 safety this season. "Otis played quite a bit of safety last year in Detroit," Belichick said. "We used him some at safety here more in the 2000 season and a little bit in 2001 but primarily at corner but he did play more safety last year in Detroit. That would be a possibility."
