Updating a previous item, Kansas City Royals SS Yuniesky Betancourt agreed to a one-year deal Tuesday, Dec. 20. He will back up SS Alcides Escobar at shortstop and serve as depth off the bench. He could also spell 3B Mike Moustakas at third base.

Even though the Milwaukee Brewers paid SS Yuniesky Betancourt a $2 million buyout rather than pick up his option at $6 million, that doesn't mean he won't be back in 2012. The team will peruse the market, and might make a lower offer to Betancourt if nothing pans out in free agency.

Milwaukee Brewers 1B Prince Fielder, RP Francisco Rodriguez and RP Takashi Saito classify as Class A free agents. SS Yuniesky Betancourt is a Class B free agent. However, Saito's contract prohibits the team from offering him arbitration.
