Milwaukee Brewers SS Yuniesky Betancourt spent the offseason learning English after being cast aside by the Kansas City Royals the year before because Royals manager Ned Yost said Betancourt had become part of what was a "losing culture" in Kansas City. "It was a really frustrating time for him," said Betancourt's agent, Alex Esteban, who began representing Betancourt shortly thereafter. "He was being portrayed one way, and that's just not who he is."

Fantasy Tip: Betancourt has filled in nicely with the injuries to Aramis Ramirez (knee) and Corey Hart (knee) at the corner infield spots, and his multiple eligibility makes him even more intriguing in fantasy leagues. Now that he's being more patient at the plate, too, his power stroke has resurfaced. He might finally be putting all his skills together to help him finally realize his true potential. His playing time will get tricky once Hart returns from the DL, but that's still a ways off.

Milwaukee Brewers INF Yuniesky Betancourt is displaying more patience at the plate so far this year, and it's partly attributed to his work in the Mexican Winter League. "I like what he's doing, obviously," manager Ron Roenicke said. "I don't know if the pitches per at-bat show that, but he's different. He's taking pitches - especially the first pitch." He has three home runs and 11 RBIs over his last seven games. Betancourt has also displayed solid defense at third and first base, and he can also play both second base and shortstop, if needed.

Milwaukee Brewers SS Yuniesky Betancourt signed a one-year major league deal that will be worth up to $1.4 million, including incentives, Tuesday, March 26. 3B Donnie Murphy has been told that he won't make the roster as a result. "We signed a veteran guy (in Betancourt) who we have a lot of familiarity with," general manager Doug Melvin said. "Since we're going to have Alex (Gonzalez) play a lot of first base early in the season, Yuni gives us a guy who can play multiple infield positions. He did a really good job last year with Kansas City in that role." Betancourt could also chip in in the outfield to start the year.

Philadelphia Phillies INF Kevin Frandsen homered Friday, March 8, and is batting .385 (10-for-26) with six extra-base hits in spring training. Frandsen is battling with SS Yuniesky Betancourt and 2B Freddy Galvis for a roster spot. Manager Charlie Manuel has an affinity for Galvis, and the team can't send him to the minors without passing him through waivers.
