Buccaneers | Ruud hoped holdout would spark contract talks

Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Barrett Ruud said he hoped to spark contract negotiations by holding out of voluntary offseason workouts. The move, however, did not accomplish his goal. "I'd like to think everything will take care of itself, but that remains to be seen," said Rudd, the team's leading tackler the past two years. As reported, he may still opt to hold out of training camp if talks do not progress by then.

Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Barrett Ruud said he would not rule out the possibility of holding out during training camp because of his contract situation but hopes to get that situation resolved before camp. He said there not been any talks with the Buccaneers about an extension.

Scott Reynolds, of PewterReport.com, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have shown concern over LB Barrett Ruud missing the team's 14 OTA sessions due to a contract dispute. Ruud is not only one of the team's best players, he is also the leader of the defense, which is in the process of installing new defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme. "Of course we put a large emphasis into our offseason and our OTAs, and no doubt that Barrett has missed a lot of time," said linebackers coach Joe Barry. "…Especially now with there being a new system with new terminology a handful of new players and new coaches. I'd be lying to you if I said, 'Oh no, Barrett didn't miss anything. He'll be fine.' He missed quite a bit of stuff."

PewterReport.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Brian Griese, PK Matt Bryant, P Josh Bidwell, OT Donald Penn, DE Greg White, LB Barrett Ruud, LB Angelo Crowell, RB Derrick Ward, RB Cadillac Williams, WR Maurice Stovall, OG Arron Sears, CB Torrie Cox and OG Julius Wilson sat out the team's voluntary practice Thursday, May 28. Some players, including White, Williams, Stovall and Sears, were believed to be receiving treatment during practice. Ruu and Penn's absences are believed to be contract-related.

He did say that everything was fine. Contract talks regarding an extension for him are in their infancy. His agent, Ethan Lock, termed the situation a "nonissue" and said he didn't want to talk about it.

LB Quincy Black said, "As of right now, Barrett is not just the leader of the linebacker room, but he's also the leader of the defense. He goes out there day in and day out and does his job and performs well."
