Fri, 13 Jan 2012 06:07:57 -0800

The San Francisco 49ers defense understands stopping New Orleans Saints RB Darren Sproles will be key in their Divisional Round playoff matchup. "There's no doubt that he's a unique running back," LB Patrick Willis said. "For a guy his size, he does it all. He runs in between the tackles, outside, catches the ball really well. He's a complete running back. Certainly, we're going to have to know where he is at all times." Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio added, "I can't believe they got him for the cheap price that they got him for replacing Reggie Bush. I think if it was the NBA, the commissioner might have stepped in and stopped that move."

Saints | Use of running backs a work in progress

Thu, 22 Sep 2011 00:25:56 -0700

The New Orleans Saints have three talented running backs in Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles, and head coach Sean Payton said the integration of the three on the field is a "work in progress." Payton said the coaching staff thinks a lot about the way the three backs will be utilized during games.

"If you separate Darren's role a little bit, if you start with some nickel packages and a little bit of this 'lighting' term we use where we're wanting him specifically on the field much like with Reggie. I don't want to say that's easy, but that becomes the easy part of the equation. So if we can establish that we have a package that involves Sproles both in the nickel and in the base, then I think the bigger trick is coming up with a ways between Pierre and Mark," Payton said.

Payton said the team tries to give both Ingram and Thomas some semblance of a rhythm, allowing each a couple series at a time on offense. "That whole time there are some times and groupings that might trump whatever the rotation might be. But there's a lot of thought given to it," he added.

He added there may not be an exact science to the rotation and the backs want to see their involvement in the offense with the game plan and how the game unfolds.

Ingram currently leads the team with 91 yards rushing on 27 carries.

Tue, 26 Oct 2010 07:34:19 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner believes RB Ryan Mathews is not yet ready for crunch time, which would explain why Mathews watched from the sideline the entire second half of the team's Week 7 game, according to Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune. RB Darren Sproles, meanwhile, caught six passes for 53 yards in the game's final six minutes. "Please," Turner said. Chargers | Coach feels Ryan Mathews will have productive season

Sat, 24 Jul 2010 08:40:53 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said rookie RB Ryan Mathews is joining a "really talented football team" this year, reports Christopher Smith, of Chargers.com. "It's certainly a team that doesn't have to lean on him," Turner said. "That being said, I expect Ryan to have an extremely productive season. I expect him to be a big part of our running game and he's shown that he's going to be very capable as a receiver. We felt he was the most complete back in the draft and we're going to give him an opportunity to be a factor right away."
