The Tennessee Titans and head coach Mike Munchak were interested in adding Seattle Seahawks running backs coach Sherman Smith to their staff, but he is happy in Seattle and not interested in leaving his current position.

Ryan O'Halloran, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sherman Smith's father died this week after a lengthy illness. Smith missed practice Wednesday, Aug. 5, and is expected to return Aug. 6. KFFL sends their condolences to Smith and his family.

Washington Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said during his press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine Friday, Feb. 22, that it was important to hire Sherman Smith as the offensive coordinator because Smith has a strong history and experience as a running backs coach. Zorn, who has a quarterback background, felt it was important to find a strong minded running coach.

The Associated Press reports the Washington Redskins hired Sherman Smith as the team's new offensive coordinator Friday, Feb. 15. Smith was the running backs coach with the Tennessee Titans since 1995. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans assistant coach Sherman Smith still has not made a decision on whether to accept an offer from the Washington Redskins to become their offensive coordinator. Smith will talk with head coach Jeff Fisher before making a final decision. "I need to sit down and talk to Jeff about it and hear what he has to say and go from there," Smith said.

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Washington Redskins officially asked the Tennessee Titans for permission to speak to assistant coach Sherman Smith about their offensive coordinator's position Monday, Feb. 11, sources familiar with the situation said. The Titans aren't expected to keep Smith from interviewing if he is interested in the position.

As of Sunday, Feb. 10, the Redskins had not asked the Titans for permission to talk to Smith.

"He's very much deserving of this promotion and this recognition," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "He's done a tremendous job and been a stabilizing factor in the organization, and the players have a great deal of respect for him."

Jim Wyatt, of the Tennessean, reports the Tennessee Titans have agreed to a new deal with running backs coach Sherman Smith. Although terms of the deal were undisclosed, it is believed Smith's contract runs through 2006, which is the final year of coach Jeff Fisher's contract.
